  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I have played a litte bit with the Red store. Let's say I take the Epic-S for $12 000, what do I need as a minimum setup to shoot (one man band)? I would go for Compact Flash Storage because of the price. What's the difference between the RED STATION COMPACT FLASH and the RED ONE CF MODULE? Does the Epic-S even have an inbuilt Compact-Flash-Slot? Do I need an additional cable? Is an charger and a battery included?

So could someone compile a minimum setup for CF recording? Thanks a lot.

At this point, it's not clear that the Epic-S concept still exists. No one is going to know until November 3rd what RED is going to produce outside of Epic-M and Epic-X. Red doesn't have a CF module, but they have said that they will have a CF adapter for their side SSD module.

So, assuming you buy a brain of some kind, you're probably going to need (for a minimum set up):

- 5-inch touchscreen
- Side handle or some other power option (I'm not sure what the other option would be... red power pack with red bricks? red backpack quickplate with red bricks?)
- A couple of Redvolt batteries or Redbricks and a charger
- Either a brain with a fixed lens or removable electronic zoom lens and/or other lenses, but we don't know what kind of mount right now
- Side SSD module with a CF card adapter and CF cards
- SSD or CF cards
- Redstation

Hm, so I need a side handle? Do I need the touchscreen because the brain does not have a screen? Batteries and charger are not included with the brain? And what is a redstation and why do I need it?

Seems quite complicated.

Side handle will hold the Redvolt batteries. If you don't have this, you'll need to power it from larger Brick batteries (and need the relevant adapter).

The Brain is just that - a brain 'box'. You then add a touchscreen or EVF (both 'currently' cannot run together as there's a single port for them on the Epic body)

Remember that the Epic M (and X now) are all part of the same DSMC concept, so all Red accessories now are designed to work on Epic/Scarlet etc (especially as, last we heard, the Scarlet will use the same body).

For now, look at the way Epic works and read threads to see how other users have them rigged.

Doubtless, when we hit Nov 03, Red will have 'kits' ready to make life simple (as with the Epic M now).

A Redstation is the interface to get your Red Raw footage (on SSD etc) to your host computer.

-and audio!
you're also going to need some sort of audio interconnect from the mini-connector ports on the camera front to an industry-standard interface: XLR presumably.
So a wee box like the one made by wooden camera or element technica will be in order...

Not passed stage 3. They are only supplying the PL mount with the Epic X packages. It's optional after that since so many have said they only want a Canon or Nikon mount and don't want to spend more than they have to..

And why are they selling a P/L mount for $2 000? Doesn't the camera come with a P/L mount as standard?

I think I'll go with a 64 Gig SSD for the start. How much recording time in which resolution does this give me? And how do I get the footage from the SSD to a PC or Mac?

That's what you need a 1.8" SSD Redstation for. To offload Redmags to a computer.

Camera,
Lens, (depending on which one you will use you might need an adapter)
Power and charger,
Media,
monitor, or viewfinder
I believe that's the bare minimum you can start shooting with
I would go for Compact Flash Storage because of the price.
CF cards are actually more expensive per Gb, SSD is cheaper and better media solution, it is more expensive per unit compare to CF, but you don't
have to worry about high frame rate at max resolution, and btw, it's way cheaper than Sony SxS or god forbid P2 media
What's the difference between the RED STATION COMPACT FLASH and the RED ONE CF MODULE?
RED STATION COMPACT FLASH is a CF card reader, you can use any reader, but the media is proprietary, RED ONE CF MODULE will not work with Scarlet,
there (probably) will be available CF card adapter for SSD module which comes as a default option

and the rest we'll find out on Nov. 3rd
:)
