Hello redusers,

I'm a new member in the forum and a new RED user starting out on the EPIC-M body. I don't have much experience with building rigs as most of the work I've done in the past was just with handheld cameras.

Any of you guys care to suggest a list of parts for building the new rig?

Requirements would ideally be a short rail with the means to mount a RedBrick, Matte Box, A handle which still allows the touch screen to stay on the camera and a quick release system.

Ketch Rossi seems to have a sweet setup here: http://www.vimeo.com/21657898 but I cant quite make out what parts are used and it seems the most critical ones like the Redbrick rail mount is not available through the Red Store.

I'm trying to build something very similar for mainly handheld and tripod work, something that keeps things compact and easy to use just like when travelling around a lot.

Can I ask exactly which what parts you used? ( which top handle + screen mount, side arm, and tripod mount). Are all those parts on the RED store or do I have to get some from other companies?

My budget doesn't allow for much experimentation so I hope I can get some advice from more experienced users.

Thanks, I really look forward to your reply!!

Not that I want to water down what others do... as we are all different.

But I have shot a few million dollar commercials with this setup of late.
very simple...

I just don't like being bogged down with heavy or big camera setups anymore..

hope this helps.

Love your style Mark! Sometimes I feel a big fancy rig is really just for impressing clients. And despite your 'bare-bones' setup, your work is brilliant!

Hi there,

I'm mostly quiet around here and observe more than participate, however now I just had to since am possibly struggling with similar issues.

Mark, could you specify the exact parts required for a setup similar to yours? I see you have Brooks top plate at least, then obviously some handles. Cant pinpoint the exact one you have there. 15mm rods would be nice to have for a light mattebox/ff setup but I'm guessing the modular assault plate pack could do the trick? How is your VF mounted on and is there room to slap on the 5" monitor for an AC? What about using bricks when longer record/use times are required? Any other smart/compact way then the red backpack system? The backpack kind of leaves the remote without power, correct?

I'll stop my flood of questions here. But don't worry, I'll have more :)

And no touchscreen, so parameters are manipulated with the RedMOTE or side handle, looking through the EVF?

EVF will replace touchscreen, dsmc redvolts for handheld, anton's for sticks, RPZ 17-50 (it has screw on 67mm ND and/or Pola. All in all. It's still pretty small.

I use series 9 ND's for this configuration..

Or a very small clamp arri 4x4 matt box.

Brooke willards top, bottom plates and side rail.. to hold onto the EVF.. 5 inch with one bolt goes on top of the handle... if needed... or a small TV LOGIC HR lives on the top. for EVF HDSDI play back simultaneously. Camera still stays light then.
Battery power is V lock in a belt clip or bum bag... or RED VOLTS.

It's as simple as that. :))))

And simple is indeed beautiful most of the times. What do you have holding the EVF on the side? A spinner setup of some kind? How does it work for you on, let´s say shoulder work?
