Hi Everybody,
People need lenses. However, cine lenses are very expensive, and the price is not affordable for most people. So, still camera lenses are used by many people. There are some still camera lenses are modified and then sold in the market. And the price of the modified lenses usually becomes several times or even tens times of the original price. The is a ridiculous phenomenon. You have to know, the optics of rehousing lenses are still camera lenses. If it can only mount on cine camera, and without any improvement in function, then why not just mount the still camera lenses on your camera. (Nowadays, most digital camera can change the mount.)

So, what is the value of the rehousing lens?
The most valuable part is improved focusing structure if it is added on this lens. However, this is the hardest part to design, requires technique and costs most. But in the market, many rehousing lenses are focusing on modifying to PL mount, and maybe add iris ring and focus gears. If I have to spend thousands to buy these kinds of rehousing lenses, I’d rather to spend money on good mount systems for my camera.
Here I can give you some suggestions for choosing rehousing lenses:
- First, you have to pay attention to the quality of lens’ optics. You have to make sure that the quality is worthy for your money.
- Second, you need to choose one lens has very long and accurate focus rotation and scale. This is very important on video filming and I think everyone knows it.
- Third, you have to compare the original price with the rehousing price.

Anyway, we have to put our money on lenses with good optics, accurate function, instead of on PL mount or gears.

And now I would like to show you some of my works.
Many people know that I am doing rehousing as well. I really take too long time to do it, because I keep test and test and some lenses can not rehouse with same way. So I have to figure out different structures. Anyway, all of my test is just for one thing—to improve the accuracy of focus. These parts is some of my test parts, all of them are become wastes.

This lens was showed to you before, and it is under producing now. You can see the focus scale from the closest to the infinite is almost over 350 degree.

And this is another lens, rehousing from Nikon 14-24. For super-wide zoom lens, many people asked me about Tokina 11-16, and I said no, because the optics of this lens is not good enough, and would be horrible if use on EPIC 5KFF. Therefore, I’d rather to spend my time and money on Nikon 14-24, although it is not as wide.

Of course, you can find out that the focus structure of this lens is re-designed by me, so that we can get very long focus(sorry, I can`t show clear picture). People might be interested in the pricing, and I can promise that the price of it will be very reasonable.
And I will make rehousing ZA prime lens. But it won’t have PL mount. It will go with A-mount and EF mount. Now, I can hear so many people asked “why?”. If I want to make a fortune, I would choose a cheap lens and modify it to PL lens. But I am not a businessman, I am a cinematographer, I like very much how ZA(Zeiss for Sony) lens performs, more than ZF(Zeiss for Nikon). Unfortunately, ZA lens is not like Nikon lens, it doesn’t have enough space to modify to PL mount. So I choose A-mount (because it has cine-style lock) and EF mount (because it can be used for many cameras). It is not important for a lens to have what mount on it, the most important is the optics quality.
I can't abandon ZA lens optics. Even though it won't sale very well if it is not PL mount, I will still produce it.

Thanks for watching, it`s time to go back to work.

I can't wait to see what all you come up.

Will the Allstar mount be permanently attached to the lens? I hope so. This would be brilliant.

Nice peek behind the curtain.

I'm very interested in how you lens guys do your work behind the scenes, and I also want to learn more about lens maintenance for my own curiosity - I don't want to do, professionally, what you and Matt Duclos and Jacek do.

So, I noticed you didn't like the Tokina 11-16 lens. I had thought it was a nice lens on Epic. Not fantastic, but it covers a difficult range that I actually don't use often. (Although I wish I had an 11-16 for Star Trek. Finnerman used a 9mm and 18mm on the original series quite a bit.)

What I am really looking forward to is the enabling of motorized focus control on Canon AF lenses on Epic together with RedMote Pro. Today, the Canon lenses don't offer great usability for cinema work. With motorized focus control though, the zooms especially would be very usable for low end work.

As it stands today the best low cost Epic lenses would be the Zeiss ZE lenses with a focus ring permanently attached. (Actually, that's a task I'd like to learn to do myself - but where do you source the rings? What tools do you need?)

I have been looking for the pressed on rings everywhere and cannot find them. I assume RP and Duclos either makes their own or has them made just for them?

Apparently you can buy delrin gear blanks frpm engineering suppliers and machine them to the lens diameter needed. im no expert but Id hope the lens guys could point you at a source.

Tom/Allstar, if you sort the Nikon 14 24 and VR 2 70 200 2.8, then Im very interested.

Hello AllStar,

I have been using and promoting the Ruby since the beginning.

I think the Optics are super.

I would love to see your version of the Lens.

Please us updated on this lens?

Thanks

Why do the Nikon 14-24 when someone else already does? Why not concentrate on what is not currently available elsewhere?

Agreed with you but Isn't good for a user? Ruby is 12K, more then 6x then the original price. Let see what will be his price.

Because I think people will need this wide zoom lens for EPIC, 11-16 can`t cover 5K. and the price for this rehousing lens on the market is not reasonable, I want to be a rich man too but my mother taught me people should have conscience.

Hi Omkar,
I won`t do this job, it isn`t rehousing, it will just modify the mount. Modify a lens to PL mount usually cost extra $1500+ in the market. But as I said before, you should think about what you paid and what you got. After modifying to PL mount, dose the optical quality become better? no. After adding focus gears, can you get more accurate focus rotation than original? no.
Maybe you will say PL mount is a standard lens mount in movie camera, please watch your camera, can`t it change other type of mount? a good camera mount may cost $500, $1k, even $2K, but purchasing a set of modified lenses will need more extra $$$, just for their PL mount.
Some of cameras can`t change the mount, like Alexa or F35, but I don`t think people want to use these lenses on those cameras.
