I am confused.

I was just as excited as everyone when the Scarlet was first announced a few years ago. Then in January, it was officially announced that Scarlet was dead before she was born and that Epic would replace her at a higher price point. However, Scarlet remained on Red's website with "coming soon" beneath it. Now in the forums (which I do not check often) you are all talking about Scarlet like she is still in the womb with an expected delivery date of "TBA."

Is the Scarlet idea back to "TBA" status or is it dead? Sorry if this has been discussed before but the more I read, the more confused I get. If there are discussions out there, please provide links.

Thanks!

Corey

Scarlet is still on the roadmap, to be released next after Epic (which is currently shipping) but as to the question of when, it could be days, weeks, months, or years away (most are hoping to have in early 2012 at the latest).

Red has shown off a working prototype of the Camera.

Hello Corey,

The RED team has indicated that there were major setbacks in development of the Scarlet with the disaster in Japan and that it will inevitably be delayed as a result.

In addition, it seems that RED is focused on taking care of the Epic shipments right now which also puts the Scarlet on the back burner in terms of imminent importance.

The good news is that RED has announced that after the Epic orders are taken care of, the Scarlet will be next on their list. There does seem to be some confusion however with the removable lens version of the Scarlet and the Epic S which no longer appear to be on RED's agenda. RED continually eludes that they have some "Big Explosion" that will hit the market soon, so some have taken this to mean that the Scarlet, when it gets released, will be a combination of a Scarlet and Epic-S brain.

Given this limited knowledge, most people expect the Scarlet to finally be released anytime between November and NAB 2012, with the more likely scenario being before the end of the year.

...and this pretty much brings you up to speed with everything on the Scarlet front.

Thank you,
~Omar

I believe "more hopeful scenario" rather than "more likely scenario" would be a more appropriate description of our speculation on Scarlet's release date.

Thanks Graeme, Omar and Ameer for the update. The dream is still alive.

Omar summed it up pretty well. I would just like to add a couple of points:

RED never officially announced that the Scarlet was dead, nor was EPIC ever a replacement for it. What was at one point called the S35 Scarlet became the EPIC-S and I believe this is what has caused this confusion the most.

The EPIC receiving the priority it is over Scarlet was always part of the game-plan as RED has stated this for a very long time, so it's not like it came out of nowhere.

Also the removable lens Scarlet and EPIC-S were not explicitly mentioned in the recent roadmap given. That isn't necessarily the same as not being on their agenda but it is what has lead to all the recent speculation about some new camera to replace them.

Best bet is not to think anything. It's super annoying, but that's the way it is.

No news on the Scarlet till it's released, that's what Jim has stated...

If the Scarlet was close to release Joseph would have been given that instead of an Epic. Scarlet concept is being rethought. Expect an announcement within a month and release some time next year to compete with new Canon etc.

Who ever said he was "given" an EPIC? If you actually ready his EPIC M thread you'll see he bought his. Way to go for him! That says absolutely zip about the Scarlet. Someone buying an EPIC has no relation to the current state of the Scarlet program. None.

Scarlet won't come out and play until someone is in the same league. Take that to the bank.

I think they will release Scarlet when the software reaches a development stage suitable for the prosumer market. Epic and Scarlet pretty much share the same firmware according to Jarred, so until the full feature set, including items like in camera playback, are finished and stable for Epic I don't think we will see Scarlet released.

In all fairness though, Scarlet 8X wasn't specifically mentioned either. It just said "Scarlet". It could have been a blanket term for both Scarlet 8X and Scarlet Removable. I will concede, however, that if one of them was dropped it would have most probably been the Scarlet-R.

Good point.

I merely meant that I think the lack of explicitly naming each camera in the announcement was what has spawned the recent bout of speculation. And that just because they didn't say something about, say, the EPIC-S doesn't mean its been scrapped or merged with another product or whatever. It just means they didn't say anything about it. So I think we're on the same page.

Poor choice of words and assumptions on my behalf. But I do think this is an indication of the status of Scarlet. This would have been an idea camera for someone starting out in the industry.

I'm starting to look into EpicX land as I feel this Scarlet non-release is due to something more then firmware & lens issues.. I think it may have to do with base standards and other companies talkin' the 4k talk. In any case, I don't think we'll be seeing Scarlet fixed for some time...

Remember Red is doing very well in the 3D world due to epics size and resolution. The two scarlets and mostly the removable will be perfect for this especially with their 2/3" sensors, and custom made mini primes, and 3D rigs. So I don't think both will get the axe might be improvements but I'd expect them both to exist. But then again what do I know.

RED has only just now begun to actually mass produce EPIC-Xs. EPIC was always going to come before Scarlet.

The "non-release" isn't that at all IMO, its a consequence of current circumstances with EPIC eating up all the time and resources to produce cameras at RED right now.

I sure wish I had been given an EPIC. psh. I'd be just as thrilled to be given a Scarlet! It's interesting to note how many people seem to be voicing such opinions.

For the record: The only ones getting a discount on their EPICs are the EPIC-X Stage 2 and Stage 3 reservations. They are even getting free modules. I'm not jealous of that fact. I just find it interesting how so many seem to expect me to receive FREE or DISCOUNT.

The Scarlet was first announced 3 years ago. It was announced when I had a completely different mindset of what I wanted to do and what I thought was possible for me to do at that time.

My path in life has taken a few turns for what I think is for the better in the last 6 months.

If Scarlet were to be released in 2 weeks, I would still have no regrets for purchasing the EPIC-M. Making that purchase is only an indication that my dreams have expanded since the Scarlet's initial announcement and not that I foresee another 6 month delay.

With that much being said, I'm looking forward to being able to save money for a Scarlet once more... :)

Doubtful. It doesn't take much time and resource to hire and train another team of Scarlet "assemblers"... There's been so much time in the middle to organize said team it's not even funny.. There's something else going on in my honest OPINION ; )

I agree with you, Ryan...
