I thought I would post this as I know a lot of EPIC present and future owners would like to have an interim cheap option to use Nikon G lenses until
a Smart Nikon mount is approved and released for EPIC.

This is a simple non-destructive mod that can be set up quickly and removed in a couple of seconds...does not mar nor hurt lens nor camera.

Aperture on the G is controlled by a lever that rests in a well or trench ... most of the lenses rest at smallest aperture and moving the lever opens the lens. I decided to try inserting a soft
spacer to open up the lens ... with a bit of study I found that a small soft plastic tubing which is just a small bit larger than the well can be gently inserted and it will move the lever and open the
aperture. It turns out that one piece opens the lens to about F4-5.6 and two open it to max aperture.

Lever with two pieces:

Small segment of the tubing:

Due to diffraction effects 5.6 may be a great aperture for max sharpness....wide open suffices for limited DOF.

Add a Variable ND to the front or change shutter and you pretty much can use the lens in most situations.

Critical to the success of this is to pick a tubing that inserts with moderate difficulty so it will not move, cut the tubing so that only a small amount resides above the well but below the length of the lever -
this prevents it from being moved. The tubing should insert to the bottom of the well so that it is stable. Soft pliable tubing avoids any stress to the lens or mount.

Care should be taken when mounting and removing the lens to avoid pressure on tubing or lever.

Once you have done this a couple of times it is dead simple...you can even change from one segment to two in the field as desired with a pair or small needle nose pliers.

Best part of this is it costs nothing and when the Smart Mount arrives you will have infinitely better control over the lens.

There is a Nikon mount approved for Epic currently. It's a professional solution with G lens iris control , calibrated scale and positive locking.
Am I missing something?
How would you put a Nikon lens on the Epic without it? There is no other Nikon mount available afaik:thumbup1:

Ha Ha ; )

I've been using this method with The Tokina 11-16 on my R1 Nikon mount for some time.

Using it on R1 and am still awaiting my ProLock...any idea as to delivery date?

We are getting close to completing the second batch. Will send everyone emails when it's time.....

I've been using the OptiTek EPIC Nikon mount for a while now and all i can say is stunning piece of work. While few, if any G lenses cover full 5k sensor, a slight bit of zoom (on zoom lenses) is appropriate. i think a 1.3 crop factor is about right....so on the tokina 10-17....i find zoom to 13mm works right.

Couple of frame grabs from my Red 1mx & OptiTek mount using Tokina 10-17 at 10mm

John,

Thought that all of the FX G lenses should cover 5K....are you referring to DX G Zooms?

This is from August 3:

Just an update.. OpiTek got us the mount.. and it checks out A-OK... room for the pins so its not gonna blow anything up. Well made piece of kit.

Jacek gets a clean bill of health.. no voided warranties from using the ProLock + EPIC :)

Hi Jacek, Jarred just responded to a question about if RED has yet approved the OptiTek Epic Nikon mount. His response was...

Ian, that quote was in response to a question about an Alstar mount for Epic. The Optitek mount has been approved and shipping for more than a month now.

Yes I see thanks. I deleted the post to avoid any confusion. Sorry Jacek, the OptiTek Mount is a sweet piece of kit.
