  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Time code generator

Do you need it to jamsync or just generate? I have a low cost T/C box for sale if you're interested.

I used to use it to lock 6 Red Ones together.

Thanks Jim I am interested but need to know what the best solution is to generate time code for two epic's master and slave for 3D.

What about using the AJA Gen 10 will this generate timecode between each camera?

I'd recommend:
A) Ambient with TC split to both cameras, genlock into a good DA and split to both cameras (do NOT split genlock with a T barrel)
B) Ambient with a dual output genlock and TC split with a T.
C) Evertz SPG for TC and genlock
D) Ambient for TC (split) and Gen10 for genlock

D is not ideal because TC and genlock aren't in phase with each other.

We are curently running 4 epics simultaneously for 3D texture capture, what is the best method for genlocking and TC across 4-5 cameras? Currently we use a Deneke slate for TC (plug into each camera one at a time) and a Gen10 for genlock (5 ports).

Get a Denecke SB-T

I agree with Jason here. This is what I use.

It also makes genlock. I believe that the same clock should make the TC and GL.

Cheers,
Rich

Gen10 is the cheapest and easiest solution for that.
The only downside being that it doesn't provide TC from the same clock
and it's a bit drifty.

The Evertz SPG 5600 might also be a good choice but it's a bit pricey
or possibly putting two 1x4 DAs on a single genlock/tc source.

Thanks everyone for the feedback I need this solution for the Deep Atom system to work with Atom and 2 Epics. I will process all your suggestions and get feedback from John Ellerbrock's team at Gates. Thanks again

All good suggestions. I think I've actually used everything from the above lists. I can say that Deanan is correct that having a gen10 run genlock and another device run timecode can cause drift to timecode (NOT genlock) by a frame or two from time to time. I've used an SPG masterclock for timecode and a gen10 for sync and then fed the SPG a freq. ref. from the Gen10 and that fixed the timecode drift.

The Ambient is also a great on board solution for underwater, I really like their dual output version as it doesn't require a DA.

It's also important to note that an HDSDI DA doesn't work for genlock. It's a different DA for Genlock and/or timecode. Genlock works well with a Composite Video DA (the Kramer PT-102VN works great) and timecode works well with a balanced audio DA (although if you need to split timecode only once or twice, a T can be used).

Kramer does make wonderful HDSDI DA's though. Including one that is perfect for Epic 3D as it has two inputs (L and R) and 4 outputs ( 2 x L and 2 x R) in one nice little box.

Also watch out for ground loops as they can cause genlock to disappear.... Even one device in the image chain plugged into the wrong outlet can cause major problems.

Hey Jim what is the brand and model T/C box you have for sale?
