Let us discuss here (if it's allowed) about how upcoming RED Dragoon sensor upgrade would respond on the latest sensor development by Sony.

Sanjin you always have the scoop... the problem is that that thing is already out and shooting and it's called HDrX mode on the Epic (-;

So,sony now will be building a large sensor high resolution image sensor with dynamic range of the human eye which is 24 f-stops??? Well sounds cool, Interresting future ahead of us.......

Bob as much as i love Hdrx,i would love a sensor with a native dynamic range of 18 stops........

Bob,

I discussed HDRX a lot before (search the forum) and probably RED knows well what I think about it.

Shutter speed is the oldest (photo) option to increase exposure but also motion totally unfriendly.

I see super clean high ISO that always stays motion friendly as only one way to get more exposure to a digital sensor.

Sony already showed step that with increasing DR of F3 for almost 2 stops using a special build firmware upgrade of S curve.

Also I'm not an engineer but will give you always a good direction with my sort of analysis.

Well... I'm no engineer either, but I trust what I see: shot and projected on the Big screen HDRx looks fantastic, and it's happening now: things on a lab table don't help me getting better images. I trust that when Sony will have that out in the wild Red will be two steps ahead already. That's my analysis and Sanjin we can bet a bottle of wine on that!

Bob,

Everything here in the industry is about better images.

And of course that Epic and F65 can acquire amazing images.

We should honestly say that Epic took the lead before only with its small lightweight body

but not with the price or specs on a paper.

Now F65 took the pole position (that also doesn't mean to win the race) with its

relatively (lower by Sony standards) price and also specs on a paper.

Actually Alexa is a pure loser in this race and now finally Arri is forced to change engine (sensor) to 4K.

No need of panic in RED camp but RED should now learn not to make cameras in a price range that look similar

to a sort of expensive Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Gucci, Chanel, Balenciaga, Valentino, Prada, Dior, Chloe, etc,.... a lady handbag hype.

Those prices are for rentals and a sort of users that they want to show how they are "rich",

that also doesn't mean at all that they are really wealthy.

It's a kind of lady bag catwalk or weird bitchy game as we know that Leica once lost its money...

I hope that RED now with F65 pricing has got it back...

Or simply to say should go back to the RED roots.

Sanjin, have you actually shot with the F65 yet?

I'm sorry, I just found this too funny not to post:

As part of their "Super Reality" sensor program, Sony has apparently invented depth of field for moving pictures.

And a couple of questions. They show off their new sensor idea here, in the bottom right hand corner:

1) So, alrighty. G is for Green. R is for Red. B is for Blue. W is for...w...white?

2) It also looks like that array would have a significantly decreased chroma-to-luma photosite ratio...maybe the 'W' makes up for that some how?

^ hahaha awesome!

Typical smoke and mirrors Sony crap... they really think their customers are dumb don't they? I almost find it arrogant of them to advertise the effects of shallow DOF with large sensors... like it's something we've never realized or heard of before. So stupid.

I don't think so that Sony is stupid as some people here can might think.

Just count on that the biggest box offices in our age the movies like Jim Cameron Avatar and all George Lucas Star Wars were shot with Sony (HD) cameras.

Also I'm not defending Sony here but trying to stay real...

Not yet!!!

But in my explanation above that fact doesn't mean anything...

You said Sony has taken the "pole position" with F65. How can you say such a thing if you've only seen Sony press releases and never actually seen, held, or shot with an actual camera? I'm not saying F65 won't be a great camera, but I'd wait to shoot with it before making such assertions.

W isn't for white. W should also be green photosites which is typically where luminance values are extracted from. I assume this is what is represented here but could be wrong. Actually this kinda looks like they are lowering chroma resolution to get greater luma resolution... perhaps this is why they need an 8K sensor for a 4K image?

Sanjin, I really would like to know, what your personal problem is with luxury bags ;-) EPIC X is incredible low priced for what you get and the only luxury thing is, that there are some incredible brains and believers at RED, who are willing to share there developments with us.
