  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi,
As I begin editing a rather large project I would like to have a better idea of how I will be able to match back my prores422 footage to the original raw footage, (and subsequently, how this may affect different screening methods.)

Shooting 3K ANA and 4K ANA footage -> using redcine to create more manageable prores422 files -> editing using FCP 7.0.3 (this includes relabeling the files, I had not planned on keeping track of the original file names as you can rename the clip to match the file...) -> Once a final edit has been locked I am a bit stumped.

Basic workflow from here on out would be appreciated. Color correction using Color will happen. I am also curious about different output (screening) options. Thoughts on all this appreciated, including thoughts on the first part of the workflow explained above.

Thanks,
Z

Did you rename the files in fcp or rename the prores files in finder?

Try the FCP whitepaper on red.com/support .

If the methods outlined there and your initial setup dont work, clipfinder could be a good tool.

As a hail mary, you can always export an edl out of FCP, open it directly in color and then point color to the RAW root folder...

Thanks for the direction, I'll take a look at the red site. I renamed the files in FCP. I've tested renaming them to match the original file and it works find.

In taking a look at the whitepaper PDF I am still wondering about the following:

Beginning on page 27, it outlines the workflow I choose to
use.

To get the the crux of the issue, under stage 2, item 3, the user is instructed
to choose the option "base media file names" on "existing file names." What I
am wonder is, is FCP considering the adjusted clip name (which I adjusted, only
within FCP for organizational purposes, i.e. scene number, etc) or is it considering the file name
(which remains untouched and matches the raw RED footage.) I am hoping it will
consider the file name, however if this is a problem I can always rename the
clip before getting to this step, so that the clip matches the file...

The PDF also doesn't seem to go into mixing 3K and 4K footage. Right now, it's not a problem as I'm editing prores 422 files, but I wonder upon reconforming, what issues I might run in to?

Thanks!

Export out all your files prores 422 sq or even LT is fine as a 1080p qt do not trim the files do not change the lengths just do a 1 light color grade that your comfortable with offline editing.
put them all into a folder on your fastest drive.
Drag them all into your FCP project. Rename only in FCP if ever
edit your project.

Once your picture locked you have various options on how to re-conform
ill give you 2 options
1 you use your EDL might be an XML and send to REDcine X by the time your done REDCINE X PRO will be the sweetest option
color grade all your files to a perfect 1 light grade now only doing the files in your actual project. Export out ProRes 4x4 @ 2k or ProRes422HQ
Send that back into FCP making sure its all linking properly, then send to color in reels no longer than 20 min long
do your final color grade, export out send to FCP and dump to whatever you want. Tape and or Final QT codec version

2nd option i use and love is the Clipfinder workflow. Spend 100 bucks on clipfinder and use its workflow.

Hope that helps
Luis

Gotcha. One last thing, may be a big thing, mostly a FCP question...

I am synching sound within FCP. The steps I go through are as such:

1) Change the clip name within FCP
2) Sync the clip with audio clip on the timeline(which has another original file name that I do not change.)
3) Stereo link the audio.
4) Link the audio and video and drag into a finished bin.

Now the problem I run into is that sometimes the merged clip references the audio file's source as the first source under: item properties>format>source, followed by the video's source . Sometimes it references the video's source first, followed by the audio's.

It doesn't seem like a big deal but when I, for example, right click on the merged clip (that lists the audio file's source first), choose: rename>clip to match file, the file is renamed as the audio clips original file name and not the video's! This becomes a problem when I am trying to export the EDL. The same files that list the audio first return with "PROBLEM WITH EDIT: CLIP HAD NO REEL NAME."

I cannot figure out why the audio is listed first sometimes and not other times. I have tried subtly changing the order in which I am synching the sound but it seems to make no difference. Also, I can't find a correlation between it being alphabetical or numerical...

I do realize that when I select my EDL export options and check "none" for each track under "audio mapping" this problem does not occur... all clips are properly matched with the original reel name and followed by, from what I can tell FCP shorthand (i.e. "replaced by.")

So, my question is, how do I make sure the video source is listed first?
