lucky Germans can buy this 55 inch 4K 3DTV in December 2011 for $11,500 (reasonable price for a 1st gen) -- and then, the global rollout

the era of 4K Televisions for consumers has begun :-)

now...where are those myopic naysayers hiding?:emote_couch:

this could not be true, because our friends at c.com have told us that 4K TVs for the home are still ten years away...

Not a bad price. Doesn't that reflect a giant VAT in the price?

Wow... 11.5k is a pretty decent price indeed. Didn't know we were down that low yet. Haven't looked in a while though.

Maybe 4k starts getting serious in about 2 years, or less...

ESPN said to get used to hearing "4k TV"...

mhhh....

:)

And as long as it’s tracking your face, it will adjust the TV to your personal preferences once it recognizes you. Favorite channels, shows, that kind of thing. And there’s an iPhone app! And it’ll record to and play from USB drives!

Impressive. But also kind of creepy.

The artilect war is nearing...but up until then, it'll be great fun!

I don't think anyone has said "there won't be any 4k TVs" the consensus is that it won't be mainstream.

I stick by that myself.

The question is: When?

4k sports, digital distribution, electronics' prices going down... it will become mainstream. Absolute worse case scenario, a generation. :)

Unless there's a particular 4K streaming codec that gets integrated by some of the major players in streaming video. :-)

But even then, for 4K displays to become mainstream they have to be under the magic # which I believe is $3k. Same thing happened with HD tvs. Once they dropped below that magic threshold they were bought by the masses. $11k is not mainstream, not by a longshot.

A 15" color tv in 1954 was $1000, inflation dollars over $8000 in 2010. By 1960 a 21" dropped to $495 or $3600 in 2010 dollars. Average USA income in 1960 was about $4000 per year.

So a 55" quad hd no glasses 3d tv is only about 25% more in real dollars than a 21" SD color in 1960.

Neither was mainstream at the time, but not that long until it was

You're right. It won't be mainstream. ....until it becomes affordable.

Then, It will become mainstream.

Yes Michael, you most certainly CAN watch your porn on a 4K TV. ;)

No glasses?

See that's what I'm fuckin talkin' about!

Might be a future in this 3D thing after all.

Yours sincerely,
guy who wears glasses, and doesn't particularly enjoy putting on a second pair of shitty lenses over his them and watching movies through a muddy haze.

The TV still has all the flaws of previous glasses less technology (extremely limited viewing area, low resolution look), but the 4K is really exciting. I'd love to see some 2D 4K content on the screen.
