I was planning to stick with 19mm rods but I can save some weight on adapters for both my mattebox and FF if I go to 15mmLWS.

What is holding me back is the fact that the rods only go 1" into the clamps, is this strong enough for a 2 stage 4x5.65 mattebox and double sided FF?

Yes it is. That is if you are talking about the ET mini rod adapter for the Red One. Make sure that the rods you are using does not have a tapered end . If it does, have someone machine it flat so that the diameter of the rod is 15mm all the way to the end. You will also need a couple of lengths of rods since you do not have the same amount of travel as the baseplate designs.

I use the ET 15mm LW mount on the R1 for my Arri MMB-1 and MFF-1. That's a smaller follow focus but everything is rock solid and I plan on using it with the Epic too. I dig that MB.... 2 4x5.65 stages (1 rotating) and a 4" circular stage. Not Carbon Fiber but pretty light.

15mm lightweight spec rocks on EPIC! IMO, it's the way to go unless you really need to support some big lens or something. Of course, all your existing equipment comes into play as well.

I use LWS on everything except big zooms. My run and gun/doc lens package is a duclos 11-16, an ekran 25-80, a 180mm and a 300. Then a 24 and a 50 superspeed in case I have to shoot in the dark. All that goes in one soft lens bag. The camera has LWS, cinetech FF, and an mb-19 on there, as well as hand grips. That covers all of those lenses and is very hand holdable. No down time to switch between hand held and tripod.

I use the ET LWS. It's been great. Because it's a clamp system instead of a screw on, it makes for swapping out different length rods much quicker. LWS is great for those jobs were weight/bulk is critical. Make sure you have the right MB/FF system. Our MB 20, though it can fit onto LWS, is too much hassle because the rods will bump into the MB's sunshade, same goes for Chrosziel 456. Smaller MB's like Chrosziel 450-1 or Arri MMB-1 won't bump into rods. Any clamp on will work. I've used our Red completely stripped down with no baseplate/dovetail because I had alot of handheld. LWS made this happen. I rather use some sort of rod support over clamp on MB.

That said, overall I prefer using baseplate/dovetail because it allows me to use larger swingway MB's and our FF4 can clamp from on top, making for quicker adjustment.

I use the 19mm Red Quickrelease and already bought the Epic Modular Assault plate to use with it to go from the studio 19mm to the 15mm LWS by just flipping the quick release.

I wanted to be able to quickly hop off the sticks with the matte box and follow focus attached and go handheld within seconds.

I can't wait till they ship.

Aaton XTRs and Arri SRs successfully used lightweight support for years. It's a great setup for HH, run-and-gun, and smaller zooms. 19mm was mainly an Arri/CSC thing until RED came along...
