Hi All,

So, September is near, and I just want to share some products that can help us to solve the Playback issues ( until Red's release new firmware that can playback from camera ) or an option monitoring for Epic. Since M's only got one port for EVF and LCD, and we can not use them at the same time.

1. Atomos Samurai, around US$1,600

  1. Prores HQ, 422, LT and Proxy

  • Works with Epic

  • Timecode from HD-SDI, Record Triggering

  • Can use Spinning Drive, but not recommended on Vibration and Fast Movement situation.

  • For around US$1,600 , we get a 2 pcs battery, caddy, charger, and hard case.

2. Pix240 From Sound Device, around US$2,900

  1. Works with Epic ( confirmed by SD )

  • ProRes HQ, 422, LT, Proxy and AVID DNxHD ( regarding AVID, already emailed SD, but no reply at the moment )

  • ( I like this part ), UP/DOWN-CONVERSION, means that from Interlaced to Progressive, and vice-versa. I asked SD, about the output 720p, and yes, he answered that it does down-converting the signal from 1080i to 720p. Why I asked this question ? Cause I have a CamWave, and I cannot using it with Epic.

  • Record Triggering, and Timecode over HD-SDI

3. Sidekick-HD from FFV, around US$2,500

  1. ProRes HQ, 422

  • For US$2,500, bundling with 128GB SSD.

  • Record Triggering and Timecode over HD-SDI

Pix240 attracting me for its UP/DOWN-CONVERSION feature. I know the price almost twice compare to Samurai, but if it does the signal conversion, then it's worth the penny. I can use my other tools that can only accept certain signal.

And btw, Samurai and Pix240 launch on early or mid September. Some reseller already put 'In Stock' note on their website. But when I contacted them, they said in-stock by the end of September.

For Sidekick, it's already on the market.

Please share your opinion, especially about the UP/DOWN-CONVERSION thing.

thanks,
Danu

Don't forget the Ki Pro Mini which apparently records the metadata, including the RED RAW file name, which would make conforming to R3D's later for color correction etc. really simple and convenient.

Have you or anyone here tested on highspeed ? IMHO it's work only at normal speed. Beside that, NO on-board monitor, that's the reason I'm not putting it on this thread.

Does the sound devices have record triggering enabled?

Answered from SD, Yes. Record triggering over HD-SDI.

Word is it does not, but no I haven't tested it. I don't think any of these external recorders will record high speed though anyway. They'll record whatever is being output through HD-SDI, which is the realtime image. You can always hook up an external monitor to the Ki Pro Mini, and the fact that it records the metadata and RED RAW R3D filenames means you can use these files for editing and conform to the R3Ds for finishing. No need to transcode dailies for editing, which saves a lot of time. I only wish it recorded DNXHD for Avid systems like the PIX240, or it would be great if the PIX240 recorded the RED metadata.
