EPIC PROBLEM ON SHOOT HELP URGENT?

Hi David,

Thanks for your concern, I do not think its a heating issue as even after cooling the camera for 3 hrs its giving same results.

any detailed de4scription of your problem? Try the force upgrade...

This force upgrade thing is a thought? ... odd that you have to do something like this. but .. worth a a try.

It seriously says that you need to buy a spare body. 120k... gulp.

Lol :smile5:

You could say that about every camera out there in the beta phase.. I think if your on a job with 100 crew you definitely should plan on having a backup body with or without a cam in it's beta phase.. :thumbup1:

Had this issue and was an 'incompatible firmware' issue. if Force Upgrade doesn't work you may need to send the body back to RED.

Def would love to know how this resolves so please keep posting updates.

NO QUESTION----in my early days i'd hire myself out with one camera & housing...could not afford a 2nd camera. BUT, now i could not even consider going without a 2nd body....situations like this remind of of JUST what can happen. And i always travel with a two camera set even when not paid...but it always boils down to production being able to pay the price....150people dead stop sure would be worth that extra camera rental in hindsight for the "wallets".

...nice to know the Force Istall worked yes?

In the grand scheme of a shoot day the rental price if the camera is peanuts. So when that gear that the whole shoot revolves around goes down, it us a massively stressful situation.

I have felt this feeling, it's shitty. When you are hearing, "we are switching to the backup body" on all the radios and a production manager is having a shit and asking you to get a back up for the backup.

You get my point, it ain't pretty.

This stuff rarely happens but when it happens it runs through this business like a California wildfire. If you are renting gear in a professional environment you gave to have a back up plan. With R1 it got so the PM's always asked for a backup body.

I'm sorry you are going through this today Harcharan. I feel for you. Even when gear us prepped and triple checked stuff can go wrong.

Hi Justin,

We all know its a beta phase and this can happen to any camera and any number of units on a single day....Thats why no one is complaining here because we know what EPIC is and what it will be in nearest future....

But RED should be seriously thinking about setting up an repair centre in Asia because EPIC is going to sell like a hotcake here in India..(This is what I assume from the response we have got in last 15days...People are calling us just to see and
feel the camera)

Harcharan

Harcharan

I'd be complaining!! Hahahah, j/k.. My point was pretty much what everyone else has also said.. With a huge crew/job where down time costs over $5000+ an hour, a backup camera is a must.. No complaints, just stating what I would do.. Still would love to know the fix!!!

Just a suggestion to al you M owners and future X owners outer, with current Force Upgrade Builts, it is imperative that as soon as you use a reformatted SSD to upgrade a camera, then you removed,
turn the camera back on without any SSD in it, then insert the very exact SSD with the upgrade in it, and reformat that SSD card, so that later on no one by error could put that same SSD on an Epic that is
turned off and then turned on with the Force Upgrade SSD... ;)

Hi David,

I think there are only TWO Epics in India..One is personal and one is ours.....So you can understand.

Harcharan

Totally! I feel your pain... I hope it gets worked out quickly and it does not cost you at all.

Ketch,

Can you explain this a bit better.

How does a camera upgrade work now?

David

Turn the camera on
Insert and reformat an SSD
Remove it and Turn the camera off
Insert the formatted SSD in to the REDMAG reader connected to the Computer, and drag an d drop the most recent Force Upgrade folder in to it.
Make sure that the Camera has the Side Handle and REDMOTE "REMOVED"
With the camera still turned "OFF" Insert the SSD containing the Force Upgrade folder.
NOW TURN THE CAMERA ON

The camera wil turn on, then the fan, then the fan will go loud then turn OFF itself.

UPGRADE NOW COMPLETE, make sure that YOU REMOVE the SSD, then turn the camera on and confirm the upgrade, then insert the SSD in the camera while turned ON and reformat the SSD, for safety.

Ketch, any reason why you emphasis -

Make sure that the Camera has the Side Handle and REDMOTE "REMOVED"

Yes correct.. Ive been so lucky with all my RED cameras (and EPICS) and ones that we have rented over the years .. We have never had a single problem (except for that still VLOCK battery system) so for the very first time we didnt have a onset backup we get caught out .... I supose complacency caught us out.. :)

Trusty old REDONE came to the rescue... Man it felt big! Ive been so used to shooting the EPIC!..

By the way Harcharan.. Your crew were great on set during the crisis... They tried everything and were very apologetic.
As you know a REDONE came to the rescue, we got through the day running! clawed back the 3 hours down, but reconfimed to me that a backup body sitting in a pelican box somewhere needs to be common practice as a internal insurance policy. I do this on all of my shoots... but hey, this is not my shoot, I'm just the hired Gun rolled in to shoot & direct it, I'm not the EP.
I new I should have dragged my EPIC along to the job... just as a backup.
2 more days to go.

I do hope your EPIC comes back to life... by the way your side grip is better then mine!!! RED must have made nicer ones after they delivered mine.

Take care, good luck.

Take care and have a safe trip home after you wrap up.
