Hi Guys,

We have been shooting with our camera for last few days and what I find the top ventilation from camera very much exposed to dust, rain, moisture etc.

Does the camera require any special care for protection and how r you guys doing it?

Thanks

Harcharan

Good question, I would also like to know how robust the heat sink area is...I was recently filming water sprays and dust tracks and my heart kept racing when it gets too close to the camera...even with a rain cover.
Anyone know if there is an 'Epic' specific rain cover available?

Thanks

I was under the impression that the heatsink area is sealed off from the rest of the body. No doubt someone from Red can confirm this for me.

Suffice to say, cover the camera as you would any piece of electronic equipment but you don't need to stress about a few drops getting into that area.

Hi,

Maybe it is but you can see the heatsink from the wide top ventilation of the camera...

Assuming, as we have been told, that the heatsink area is locked off from the electronic components, water shouldn't pose a major threat even if it directly contacts the heatsink. In fact, water is an excellent coolant and shouldn't impede the camera working properly. So the fact that the heat sink is visible doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Now, depending upon the heatsink material, regular and consistent exposure to water could cause unnecessary corrosion, which would be undesirable.

I would also like to have someone from RED chime in as to what extent the heatsink area needs to be protected from water. I.e. it's okay if a fine mist gets in, it's okay if a few drops get in, it's okay if it gets rained on for a couple of minutes without a cover, or it's okay to pour a bottle of scotch through the camera. I'd love it to be that last one. With footage. 5K 120fps. Just sayin'.

It is sealed off. Hypothetically you could run water through it and create some sort of water-cooling unit.

Yea, Scotch-cooling might be a little cooler... hehehe, alcohol evaporating and all. :)

The heatsink area is separated from the electronics.

Hi Deanan,

What get's damaged, if you pour water into the heatsink?
(Not that I want to do that ;-)

probably just the fan, which was supposed to be user servicable and replaceble.
