  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Advice needed on cloud making

I don't think it's timelapse footage. At the 20" second it seems the fog/cloud rises above a body of water, so it looks more like a device or a chemical reaction is making them. But I could be wrong. Thanks Mark and Joe, I'll be looking into that possibility as well.

Hard to tell watching youtube on my tabet but the stuff of Chris Isaac might be done with a water based fogger on high output then shoot at 60-90fps. Try a couple tests. You'll have to figure out the proximity of the fogger to edge-of-frame to get the effect you want.

Little tip: bring lots of extra fog juice when running foggers at full blast outdoors.

Thanks Paul. I also believe it's some kind of industrial strength fogger. I did a full search on the net but only small to medium size foggers are found none of which I believe could reproduce this kind of effect.

The opening is maybe timelapse footage. In the shots with Chris Isaak in, it's probably two or three portable (non-mains powered) exterior foggers on full blast just out of frame maybe - just my guess. You can hire them from most Visual Effects companies.

Safety note: don't just let anyone operate these special effects/industrial foggers - if incorrectly operated they can become burn/fire hazards or even flamethrowers!

I agree that the opening is timelapse footage but when the singer appears in frame, the cloud behind him is really there and being produced by a fogger or something similar. Do foggers make such realistic, fluffy and thick looking clouds even at the highest output? Will rent one to find out! And thanks for the safety tips Eric.

Don't you just love the 80s Vince!! Best decade ever!

What kind of device was used to make the realistic looking clouds on Chris Isaac's "Wicked Game" video:

They seem to be very fluffy and robust.... any idea on how to achieve this effect?
Thank you in advance for your replies.

I think that is natural water vapor... if you look at the black "sand" it was shot on a volcanic island, and that vapor clouds so low look like water vapor when actual lava hits the ocean...

It was probably shot on Kilauea.

Pablo I think you found the smoking gun! It would be very difficult for a fogger to produce clouds in such volume and tickness. Only a natural occurrence such as this can make such realistic clouds. Thank you for your observation. I guess I'd have to go there to get same effect!
