Just like many, I bought the 15mm studio universal mount assuming that it was *offset*, but it isn't. How then does one go about using 15mm offset accessories on the Epic as of today? I ask this since the Epic needs -- if I'm not mistaken -- some kind of riser plate, no? Please enlighten me!

I'm just about to return my 15mm "studio" adapters. I thought the same thing, then tried to mount my 15mm studio matte box and FF1, but noticed something very quickly...no offset. I asked my bombsquad rep and she said she didn't know anything in the works as far as an additional camera mounting plate with an offset. So, mine is going back and I'm just gonna suck it up and move on to the 19mm set up. I like the quick release system red has, I just wish they would've thought about the 15mm offset before putting them into production. Are there any 15mm studio accessories out there that are centered? If not, why make the 15mm adapters with out the offset...doesn't make any sense at all to me.

I haven't heard anything official but other REDUSERs are also in need of a solution. Most people seem to think the solution will be a new offset plate, but I'm hoping for a new offset platform which uses the existing plate (so that we can still quick release between 15mm studio and 19mm studio without getting a screwdriver to switch plates). There's a thread dedicated to this topic and I've seen in mentioned in several other threads:

Thanks for your replies. I did read the other thread. What I wanted to know is how to use existing 15mm baseplates (ARRI, ET, etc) on an Epic.... since the 15mm adapters are a no go. Any clues?

You could get an ET hybrid bridge plate with the EPIC shim and that would support the proper offset 15mm today. This isn't a quick release solution, that's why I'm hoping RED has something up their sleeves. I really like their quick release system except for this one incompatibility.

Actually, I just noticed that ET says the bridge plate is backordered until September 7, so I guess you can't use this solution "today" unless you already have one or can find one from another supplier.

What I'm worried about is having to invest 1400 into the 19mm quick release system only to have to invest another 1400 into a 15mm quick release system whenever Red releases it.

Hey guys, go to your local machinist and have him drill and tap an offset hole in your epic riser plate or shim or whatever. Or have him make a new plate with a hole in the right place. should cost from $25 to $150 bucks. Then everything should work yes?

Nick

Edit just so i'm clear, offset the camera on the plate.

Edit Edit - If you guys are using the red quick release hoo ha, I guess that wouldn't work.

I hear you. I think the current dovetail platform is $700 so maybe that's all we'd have to invest in an offset platform. When I consider that against another $100 for the suggested offset plate, I think the added quick release functionality is worth $600 to me. I can understand that might not be the case for everyone. Maybe RED will release both an offset plate (cheaper) and an offset platform for the centered plate (more flexible). I guess we have to wait and see what they have planned.

I'm eye balling it and I think it might work with the quick release system, but it looks like it would require shorter mounting screws. Since I don't have a machinist on speed dial I think I'll wait to see what RED comes up with.

Don't have my QR plate handy at the moment, but I recall measuring it and seeing that the inset rod would collide with the QR base anyway. Only way to do it is with the a different mounting plate that sets the camera on the QR base offset from center. So I'm expecting that plate to show up soon. The issue is we just haven't seen a picture of that plate from RED -- perhaps they're still working on it -- and they have not announced or said anything about such a thing or availability. It seems to be the logical conclusion but until it happens, there is no 15mm offset solution for the QR system. Best interim solution is the Hybrid plate from ET or the old style ET 15mm base from the RED One. Either one works just fine, but you need a shim plate to mount the EPIC to either. Works great, other than those baseplates being a bit large for EPIC and the cost...

Nick....slight chuckle here.....maybe in 1985 i could get my local machinist to do it for $25bucks...but more to your $150 or more.....but funny just seeing $25. Walking through the door costs at least a hundred.

I live in Baltimore. If you walk into a shop and say hey can you help me out, they usually do. $25 bucks would be the drill and tap a hole scenario. My AC and I share a shop, last week he needed some welding done on a stainless part he made for a motorcycle. He went to a local shop, never been there before. They welded it up right then and there. He asked how much, they said don't worry about it. Sure if you walk into a high end shop, it's going to be expensive, but there must be 250 bridgeports kicking around this town. It all depends on where you are and where you go.

We noticed the same thing on the 15mm centred option. Everything needs to beoffset and currently the centred option is not going to work...it actuallylooks like a slight oversight by RED, but considering all the amazing stuffthey have just come out with in a relatively short space of time...I suppose itis very understandable.

Jeff Kilgroe is right, there is not enough clearance on the QR plate toallow the 15mm offset, which is a shame because it is a solid piece of kit andit looks like it is the plate that would need to change in order to accommodatean offset mount

Sadly as it currently is, we can not use any of our 15mm gear on the Epicand so we will probably have to move everything across to the 19mmoptions...which is extra expense and not the ideal situation.
