  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC & Nikon Still Lens Tests - light weight for run & gun

I don't know John (I'm sure he is a nice guy) but I know Jacek and he is a GREAT guy.

I truly hope this is resolved very soon in a good way for everyone involved. It would be a shame otherwise.

Jason:
At 5K 2.4: 1 you are limited to begin at 12:1 compression. I chose to shoot 12:1 all the way up to 16:1 to see if i saw any OBVIOUS artifacting. I was impressed to get what i did out of the images at those compression rates. I did not shoot just to save space...wanted to see if the images were usable at 16:1...and answer is yes. I'll shoot next some lower compression rates as well as higher to see where i find the image breaking apart as well as how much i can get out of more image quality to allow me to dig into more post w/out any negative effects.

I've shot 5k 2.4:1 5:1 many times. I've not been limited to 12:1. I've actually never shot 12:1 and I've used the cam a lot in a lot of situations. What firmware build are you using?

Regardless, it's even more of a testament to the camera that it can do so well at those higher REDCode's with such complex imagery as water.

Jason

Jason,
what i neglected was that i was limited to 12:1 when shooting overcranked...it MAY have been while shooting 120fps that redcode would only allow me 12:1....if i recall. But yes, you are correct not at 24fps...only in overcranked mode...and i think it was when shooting max speed of 120fps. And yes....the details in the water/sand were pretty impressive for 16:1 even...in fact by FAR enough for television standards. That said, i'd love to shoot around 8:1 @ 120fps since where i saw the breakup in the image was in doing post work.

John.. RED is deep in my blood... hell, its the last 3 letters of my name. I am going to take everything personal. You definitely are stuck in the middle of this... but you posted many times above that you knew that you posting this info was probably the wrong thing to do.. so coming off like you are just an innocent bystander isn't going to fly.

Really though, you did not harm us at all so I am not upset with you at all... but you just gave Jacek a really bad day.

We have been down this road before and it hasn't ended up well. I have never seen the mount yet so I can't tell you what the ramifications are...yet. But anything that can harm the camera in any way is gonna void the warranty.

And don't think this stems from us trying to stop competition.. there are hundreds of manufactures now making approved RED products that we don't charge for or make any money off of and are very proud of... but they have the courtesy of getting approved first and making sure there is nothing that could go wrong.. and trust me, 80% of the time a manufacture sends us stuff to approve.. we find something that needs fixing.. be it mechanical interference, grounding issues, a future change in design that could render their product a brick... etc. etc. etc., That is the way it is supposed to work.

I wouldn't think that a beta product on a beta camera would risk completely ending negotiations between two companies. It seems like RED would actually want to get the products in the wild working on tests before wasting their time on correcting stupid mistakes. If the camera owner is ok with risking damaging his camera for the sake of testing mounts for a company and aiding in development of products shouldn't that be allowed even though the product isn't even approved yet? Isn't that the reason for the M camera in the first place? It's been referred to many times on the board as a Beta camera. I don't believe that Jacek should be punished for allowing his mount to be placed on such a system in order to test that it works in a the wild before it gets RED approval for mass sale.

Hi Louis,

I think it was a misunderstanding that Jacek had let the mount out without approval. Jacek has been clear that he did not let the mount out 'in the wild' and JF acknowledged that he screwed up by posting the images prematurely. There are many of us looking forward to a Nikon mount by Jacek so hopefully it will be sorted soon.

Sorry Jarred, I know your upset- but your opener made me smile, as if the spelling of your name was intentional:)

This is a RED community, there has been valuable members who had their warranty revoked, along with trade ins etc. Most are still around. What you did Johnny was gutsy, I don't believe you ment to snide RED, or through Jacek under the bus; but, as you've reflected, probably not in your best interest.

Now, when you hold an Epic in your hand, and do incredible things, like shoot with your favorite Nikon glass with a set up that's less than 10 pounds- that's pretty freaking exciting. You almost can't help but share, some of us need therapy- I know I do. So, I can understand it.

If this unintentional incident between the two manufactures is enough to stop communication, the real victims may be the Redusers,

I would love to use Nikon glass for personal shooting, and for the pro stuff, I whip out my RPP's.

GOOD NEWS......i have heard that the OptiTek Nikon mount has been approved by RED......i think i can breathe easily now......Thanks Jacek and RED to make that happen....now as long as it's true......i'm off to shoot a doc in Ecuador mostly underwater and ALL NIKON GLASS.

.....RED---smart mount WITH physical IRIS control also---PLEASE--i hope you can give that request consideration. I'd LOVE to have my lens data AND physical control of the IRIS....

1) Beautiful video, Johhny. Very soothing in the midst of a rather stressful day.

2) This isn't entirely on topic, but is there a list of RED-approved vendors and products somewhere? Or an official "RED Approved" badge that goes on third-party sites/product packaging so that the consumer can be sure they aren't messing up?

Not as far as i know....i think you just have to ask the vendor...but some things you may not need to ask....i think those items that require a tool to add or modify your RED/EPIC you may need to ask the question......
best, Johnny

Thanks again for posting johnny.

I'm glad this all worked out well.

Does the iris system on the mount work the same as on the R1 version? Can it be disabled for older Nikon lenses?

I would ask Jacek but I know he is pretty busy right now.

David

David,
you can use any Nikon lens with the OptiTek mount.....just like the RED ONE version that OptiTek made....just turn the iris lever to closed position and then use the Iris gear on the lens....does not interfere at all with older non G lenses. In fact the mount is just ROCK SOLID....and that was one of the main factors i even got this mount for my R1 way back when.....i can lock on an 80-200 w/out support when switching lenses quickly......of course when i break out the 600mm or 800mm....out come the support rods and dovetail.

...and being able to use a lot of different types (mounts) of lenses on the camera is a HUGE advantage for RED...

I'll tell you...

Antoine
