In FCP 7 I used to import my footage as ProRes Proxy then once the edit was final I would reingest the footage at ProRes 422HQ.

Seems like now it's impossible to reingest footage. I don't have a problem using RedCine X to create ProRes Proxies, but does this mean I've got to use RedCine X to transcode to ProRes 422 from the beginning and waste all that drive space?

You can upgrade to Final Cut Pro 10... which is now commonly called Premiere Pro CS5.5 and then just bypass all of that and just import the native raw files. Otherwise you can continue to waste your time and your storage space with a backwards workflow.

I wrote about a workaround in an article on anther website. I'm not going to post a link because i think it's in bad taste.

Basically your current options are.

1. Transcode everything to prores and don't look back. (obviously, not preferred but you can redo some problem shots if you had to get more out of them)
- If you do this, make sure you do a very good one light on your footage (as mark Toia reccomends) and use PR4444 or PR 422HQ from a full debayer with REDGAMMA 2 and REDCOLOR 2)

2. Use a QT proxy workflow in FCP X (yes, FCP X sees QT proxies as FCP 7 does, but it is not any faster because the support is not yet native)
-I have always suggested staying away from this workflow

3. Use an FCP 7 workflow that has been working (and was the first NLE to support RED footage)

4. EDIT in FCP X - COLOR in Davinci resolve FILE ONLY (NO R3D because no EDLS yet in FCP X
EXPORT a PRORES 4444 movie
OPEN IN RESOLVE and RUN SCENE DETECTION
GRADE
OUTPUT.

5. EDIT FCP X -COLOR FCP X
-The colorboard is amazingly good and the internal scopes are accurate in FCP X
-Renders are in 32-bit float.

Everything is a workaround with FCP X right now but Apple has stated that a summer update will resolve XML and EDL issues. LION update will also bring new functionality for larger facilities working in SAN environments.

You can move to Premiere but I do not know what that means if you are on a MAC and want to install Lion.
I find Premiere a very cumbersome and clunky editing tool, but that's just me.

Cool statement :)

Thomas.

Yep. For many years we called FCP FCA

FCP = Final Cut Pro
FCA = Final Cut Amateur

Now I am calling the next AVID release Amovie because the interface looks so much like iMovie (ewwww, who wants to edit with that) sarcasm alert! :) It's satire people.

CAMERA RGB (or REDCOLOR 2)
and REDLOGFILM.

Then redo your white balance and tint in RCX as well, to give you the most cleanest image.

HIT TRANSCODE!

Then you have the most awesome PRO RES LOG FILES with shit loads of information to grade from!

enjoy.
