I have installed Final Cut Pro X on my new machine because I can't get another copy of FCP 7. Yes, FCP-X is a disaster, but I only bought it so that I could have access to the ProRes codec for RCX and 3cP, but niether of those programs can seem to find the ProRes codec. I also have Compressor and Quicktime Pro installed on this machine too.

Has anyone else run into this problem?

there are additional download/support pages where you can download several items, from jingles to templates etc. maybe there you can download the codecs?

Before the conspiracy theories start up about how Apple must be abandoning ProRes because of separate downloads: FCP X heavily uses ProRes out of the box. But it's based on AV Foundation, so it doesn't install the QuickTime ProRes codecs by default. (Those are what other apps need, since right now AV Foundation is a private API used only by FCP X and its new companion versions of Compressor and Motion. AV Foundation will be public in Lion, but of course it will take years for third-party tools to all be ported over from QuickTime.)

Does anyone know if purchasing Compressor or Motion for $49 gives you a license to the ProRes codecs? I'd rather not be spending $299 just to get ProRes on a particular computer, but I'd pay $49. :)

The new Compressor gives you access to install ProRes... So do prior versions of FCP/Compressor/Motion.

Yes, any of those products will allow you to use the codec package I linked to above according to the installer.

I think I'll get Motion, because Adobe Media Encoder does a fine job. After Effects is a great product, but I hate using it.

Final Cut Studio 2 /FCP 6 doesn't qualify. At least it did not work on my system.

There are still dealers out there selling FCP 7 if you look around. Promax in LA was recently advertising it for $1200 or something, with some minor hardware purchase, but I don't know the details. And there appears to be four legit versions up on eBay right now.

On my mobile workstation (Macbook) I just have Premiere.

Can someone confirm that purchasing Motion (or Compressor) and then downloading the codec package linked to above will give me access to Prores export from the Quicktime pulldown in Premiere?
