I already have a MB-20II but am looking for a clip on mattebox and wanted to get opinions on the RED Mattebox vs the Arri LMB-5 or 15. I'm interested in durability, ease of use, weight and anything else you can think of. I've searched for some comparisons and can only find RED vs O'Connor comps.

Thanks in advance,

Dan Haas

I can only say that my LMB-15 is excellent, use in mostly on 14mm Ultra Prime. Do not have experience with the Red box, but it looks good in photos...

I've used and love the LMB-5 as a clip on mattebox - I own a Red Mattebox and can tell you it is not nearly as durable or useful as the LMB-5. One drop and that thing is toast. Carbon fiber is designed to hold up to a lot of tension stress, but cracks immediately with impact stress (a drop). At $700 dollars to replace your hood, the Red Mattebox is not the bargain it appears to be.

I stopped by RED today and checked out the mattebox and even though it is a solid professional product, I am willing to spend a couple of extra hundred for the known durability of the LMB-5 and I believe lighter weight.

Most every product out there has some bugaboos as well as some cool details that often aren't mentioned on forums. If you're in a major production center, the best thing to do when dealing with products that have been around for awhile is to ask the service and prep techs at a rental house.

From what I can tell from Arri's product overview, it seems the LMB-15 is the updated version of the LMB-5. In fact, they don't list the LMB-5 anymore. Anyone familiar with the differences and pros/cons? They mention "extended coverage for wide-angle film and digital lenses and new, removable sunshade."

Thanks,

M

The LMB-15 is slightly shorter (as far as I can tell) than the LMB-5, even with 3 stages, and uses metal, not plastic guides for better durabliity. That said, the Lentequip conversion kit for the LMB-5 is just fine for most lenses.

LMB-15 is a more sturdy design, and has a wider shade to allow for use of shorter focal length lenses.

Thanks Mitch. What's the weight and price difference compared to the LMB-5? What's the availability? Last I heard ARRI was having issues getting the matteboxes in a reasonable amount of time.

Be aware though that waiting times for Arri accessories at the moment are crazy. i bought a MB18 in March and have been told to wait till August or September for delivery.

Different products have different lead times. People can contact us about a specific product and we can let them know how far out the forecast is for delivery. Some are in stock now.
