  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Last Harry Potter...

I have only seen 2 movies in 3D.. Avatar was the only film where I felt that the 3D actually ADDED something. It was a gimmick in the 50s and it's a gimmick now. I do not like it, and I very rarely see anything in 3D.

In typical Hollywood fashion, most studios have ignored that 3D is much harder, and takes a lot more work and money. They are trying to find a way to cut corners. Hence the conversion.

I have no doubt that 3D will either die, or go through a massive update to make it 100x more effective than it is now.

I am not speaking as a film maker. I am speaking as an audience member. So debating with me is pretty worthless since it's my money, and I get to decide what to spend it on. :)

85% of 3D out there does NOT warrent the money it costs. CGI movies like Pixar are sometimes impressive, but my kids do not care for 3D either. I always give them the choice, and they usually respond "We don't care". So we see it in 2D.

If others love 3D, my response is "Good! Then this is a special time for you since there are a LOT of 3D movies out there.. Enjoy yourself!" But I will stick with 2D.

OH! And Harry Potter was FANTASTIC.. I loved every minute.

It was a gimmick in the 50s and it's a gimmick now.

Have you seen Dial M for Murder in 3d? I had the luck to see it some years back in an indie theater, and it was quite masterfully used. I think the reason 3d died out in the past had more to do with the extreme technical difficulty in making and displaying it, which is much easier and cheaper now.

As for HP7, I opted to see it in 2d since I avoid conversions...saw it digitally projected by a Sony 4k projector (thankfully without the 3d lens) and I must say...I much prefer digital projection over film. Best projection I've seen in a long time.

didn't mean this thread to be about s3d... i wasn't speaking so much about hp as i was just thinking it is at least a step towards an immersive experience, which i can appreciate for some forms of entertainment, like summer movies. don't kill me, it's not my favorite thing in the world, i'm just saying.

and on another note, i'll probably be going to see this movie again, soon... probably in 2d (because of $ and the crowd i'll likely attend with). i'll post my thoughts and findings.

anyone else have thoughts about the film or cinematography itself?

LOL, I know Paul things always seem to come back to the "3D sucks" debate ... boooooooring.

In terms of your OP, I haven't seen it -- it's not available in the country I'm staying now. However, I did note that it got 97% from critics on RT -- that's pretty impressive. Doesn't mean it's great, but certainly can't be bad
with marks like that.

I'm eager to see it, hopefully it comes soon.

haha... i should have known and not said anything. i don't think there's anything that can be said about s3d that hasn't been said on this forum, multiple times over and over again... i guess that's what jim and jarred feel like when they post things they are thinking about and the discussion gets sidetracked (except much worse, i'm sure)

those are high marks, didn't even look at that yet... pretty cool. i definitely recommend it when you get a chance to watch it. and i guess i need to see winnie the pooh as well... haha

I can't help but be amazed at how I have watch those three kids grow up over the last 10 years. It's been simply amazing. I LOVED Nevell's stuff in the movie. That was simply wonderful. Good to see Maggie Smith back in form after her cancer. And of course, Alan Rickman did a fantastic job tying up Snape. I was rather amazed to see so many shots that I saw in the trailer NOT end up in the final film though. That was kind of wierd, especially since a few of those shots were SO iconic. However there was a lot going on and perhaps I missed them.. Paul, like you I intend to head back and see this movie again.. Very soon The part at the end, at the train station with the 2nd Generation.. Well being a father.. I cried my eyes out.. But then I am an emotional sap.

I was also thinking to myself.. Jesus, I'll bet Warner Bros is BEGGING J.K. PLEASE GOD keep writing these things!!!!!!

:)

Ok Paul.. Is this post better? Sorry for derailing the thread, but this 3D stuff just PUSHES MY BUTTONS!

haha... thank you jay.

it has been crazy. i'm actually wondering if there's a possibility of reshooting the final scene once the actors are actually older. i'd love to shoot that... and i'm sure it would be fun for them to come back after some years. though the scene was a really great ending to the series.

i wouldn't count on any more harry potter books from jk rowling. she did what she set out to do with the stories. i would love to see if she came up with another series though.

I may take you up on that bet.. If she does not knock another one out of the park, she'll start to miss the fans and fame.. Same with the actors. They are burned out now, but as time goes on they will miss this life, it was simpler, and predictable. that can be a wonderful thing.

It may take 5 or 10 years, but I think they will all return.. It's a lot like really hot young actresses that have a thing against doing nudity on film.. They turn their noses up at it, and of course all the young guys and producers are BEGGING them to do just one topless scene... They smile and say no.. But the second they hit 40 man... They can't seem to get naked quick enough. But by then, all the guys have moved on to the next 20 something actress. Example.. Meg Ryan comes to mind... It's fun to by coy when you know what people want, but when they stop wanting it, those same people become desparate. Sad but true.

I think they will return at some point.. But the odds of catching this lightning in a bottle twice are pretty slim.

J.K. Rowling still has a few surprises

J.K. Rowling still has a few surprises

In an endearing documentary on the BBC, JK goes back to where she began writing her first book.
If you didn't admire her humanity and perseverance before, you did afterwards.
In that same documentary she suggestsed that she could easily follow the lives of many of the
characters after the "conclusion", but she wasn't ready yet.

Not all IMAX 3D is 2K digital, I think some use 70mm IMAX prints.

It's true that some do, but most don't these days (for 3D) and typically only for smaller IMAX productions due to the size and manageability of the film reels, distribution costs, etc.. AFAIK, I haven't heard of any film distribution for 3D showings of the new Potter movie, let alone in 70mm. Some of the more recent, limited-release, features for IMAX 70mm distribution, like The Dark Knight, have been stunning. But 3D releases all conform to what I stated above (sadly). Avatar and Alice in Wonderland were both butchered for the "IMAX 3D Experience".

well... just saw it again (regular film print). still a great movie... won't watch a film print again (to further derail the thread).

got a free ticket... might see it a third time ;)

while the film was obviously predictable and didn't take any huge risks, i thought the film did a very good job capturing the audience's emotions.
