  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC M Power Spike Issue

you guys that aren't having this problem likely don't need to worry about it, or ask theoretical questions. i'ts not going to be a permanent installation in the production cameras, and will likely be solved for the 1 main camera that was experiencing issues.

Actually, I got the same problem from my last shooting project, once the power spike shown on Lcd then will power off in short time
After I checking the footage from RedCine-X, I can't get the shots too...

no errors with M #884 yet.
i have camera since 16 days - i had one freeze after "magnify", and i had 3 times booting without success (black display) , after rebooting it works. no big issue.
question to red: which email should be used to sent you the log files to read?

Having read the posts regarding this issue, I am inclined to suspect the possibility that at least part of the problem is that electrical connections may be less than perfect. I have been working with a product that may help to alleviate this problem. It is rather inexpensive and may not only reduce or eliminate these kinds of problems but can also improve the signal strength and quality in all power, video, and audio signal paths. In other words lower the noise floor in both video and audio signal paths. I use it when assembling everything from a CRT projector, to computer components, to camera battery connections and peripherals with great results. Recently a cinematographer contacted me in the middle of a doc shoot. He couldn't get the vari-cam to boot up. It kept giving him errors and shutting down. He cleaned all connections twice but no luck. I treated the contacts with this product in about 5 minutes and booted up the camera and it has worked flawlessly for months and as far as I know is still going strong. I restored a projector to full health after receiving a $2,500 quote from the repair shop claiming it needed a new red tube, convergence board, etc. It has been on the ceiling working flawlessly for 4 years now. It cost me about 4 hours to treat it and about $50.00 in product. I have a few sample kits which are enough to treat every connector in your kit and some left over for emergencies. I could mail them out for those who are still having this problem so you can test it if there is anyone interested.

Is this one of the Caig products or similar?

? do you want to void the guarantee ? those parts would be hidden and if a new build could resolve this problem it is more a soft than hardware issue...

Who knows?

How about checking to see if the problem has already been resolved before spending more time on a solution that isn't necessary?

I have never used Caig products and I am told it is very different from what they offer. This product should not void your warrantee and aside from the moving and optical parts, you can literally run a camera, computer motherboard etc. while submerged in this material. In other words, it does not cross talk although it will enhance a plugin connection to the equivalent of a solder joint. It will also cure some dry solder joints. When I build a computer, I treat every connector, even the contacts of the ram and processor. The first time I did this I did a speed test of the system before, then cleaned and reseated all contacts and edge cards, tested again, no speed change, then treated with this material and got a 4- 5% increase in benchmarks.

With respect to the possibility that it may be a software issue, you are right, it may be entirely a software issue and this will not affect the malfunction. But if it is partially caused by a less than perfect connection, there may be a chance that working with the software could reduce the sensitivity to this problem and partially fix it. I don't know either way but in my mind it would be worth a try for very little cost and you get a little bit of insurance all around.
I am a dealer for this product but haven't done anything with it yet. I have been working on producing camera support systems and mods of various types for various cameras and the plan was to sell this product as one of my smaller lines. That is the reason I have not just come out and announced the product yet. I have not abandoned this plan but lately I have been setting up a new business that is taking me in another direction.

If the folks at Red are not already using this product in the assembly process I would be happy to point them in the right direction to get more info and possibly incorporate this product into their system or at least give them an opportunity to get the info so they know it's not going to cause problems with the cameras.

I saw this thread at 6AM this morning and had a shoot that started at 8. Until today I had not had this issue, then it whacked me big time...about 12-14 instances. When we re-powered it was fine but definitely interrupted the flow of our interview.

Had I had an extra 15 minutes I would have definitely done the upgrade to 1.6.20...in the end those 15 minutes would have been saved by the shut downs and restarts...oh well, it is a beta camera, but what a fantastic piece of gear to be working with regardless of the hiccup.

Suspected polywater...

On the problem, maybe it's a bit of both hardware and software; firmware parameters set too strict to account for possible tolerances in component values or timings or something along those lines: this would explain why most cameras have never had an issue, some saw it occasionally, and a handful were plagued by it. Who cares, so long as it's fixed!
