  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interesting kodak talk on film & digital

From the great Baekdal....

love that chart. really cool. thanks.

What a load of codswhallop.
First of all, it’s not gamma rays that damage electronic equipment, it’s cosmic rays.
They definitely can damage silicon devices, but usually only things with really tiny component sizes. Because large-format cameras like the RED series usually have relatively large photosites, even a direct hit by a heavy cosmic ray (actually an atomic nucleus stripped of its electrons) will not inflict noticeable damage.
The Pioneer 10 space probe slipped out of radio range in 2001 after 30 years operation in space, completely unprotected by the Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field, and its Intel 4004 processor was still working, and quite likely still is. (However the 4003 1K x 4 RAM was somewhat worse for wear, having lost quite a few memory locations to radiation damage. To keep it going NASA engineers wrote new software that specifically avoided the dud locations!)
“Fixed Pattern Noise” is simply the cumulative effect of the slightly different sensitivities of all the photosites. Since it never changes it is the easiest thing to fix, you simply take a “snapshot” of it on a plain background and subtract that from the live image.
What he’s talking about is Quantum tunnelling, which has been known about for at least 30 years.

And none of the things he's talking about have much to do with why people still prefer to shoot on film anyway.

I find it hard to believe Kodak really posted this (or that it represents the views of their management at any rate). A substantial part of Kodak's present-day income comes from patent royalties from silicon image sensors; even RED probably have to pay them something. And besides, there’s never really been a lot of money in supplying movie camera film at any time, the real money is in print stock.

Funny, KODAK forgot to mention what Gamma rays do to FILM emulsions and human tissue! Much bigger issue than a dead pixel

Oh man, I thought this thread was about HULK 3 being shot on EPIC...

If Gamma Rays hit the RED camera line, they could just change their name to GREEN DIGITAL CINEMA... and the EPIC would be renamed THE HULK

Jarred, can we get GREEN SCREWS for our EPIC-X??

cant believe nobody photoshopped two images together ;)

Ill pay $1000 extra for a Green EPIC-Hulk

He he, now I know why our Epic cameras are producing BLACK IMAGES?!?... Just kidding, he he.

With Joseph we traveled the USA across, and since I flew back to Italy, I have been traveling all over the place, and just came back from Warsaw (on this on an other thread, Alexa vs Epic real life test)...

Red Epic, is the reason of the FUD, it is simply the absolutely best camera out there, for both Imax quality Motion Pictures, as well as Frame grabbing Photo Camera at high Speed,
and we are enjoying it every day, and hope to soon be able to show you guys what we are up to... ;)

A little exploration company called NASA flys with CMOS sensors all the time without said issues at well above the gamma levels suggested by Rob. Guess he forgot they dumped their film based Hasselblads for digital cameras.
