I'm not sure which section this post would be most suitable in, or if the REDUser gods will even allow it, but I figure it couldn't hurt to try posting in the lens section since it's most relevant here. If this isn't allowed, feel free to remove it, moderators. Not looking to break any rules here. Anyway...

When life gives you lemons, …Make your lemonade stand bigger and better.
Duclos Lenses recently suffered a fairly substantial set-back. Our shop was broken into in the middle of the night and a decent amount of stock was stolen. Most devastating was the thirty, nearly finished 11-16mm conversion lenses (do the math, $3,500 a piece) just about ready to ship to customers who had already been waiting months for their lens. As most of you know, these lenses are hand built here in our shop and the demand has increased over the past six months. We had been working our hardest to keep up with demand but now we have to scratch 30+ lenses and start that batch all over again delaying the current orders and pushing back other projects, like our 70-200mm that we have yet to begin production on. In addition, several other items that were for sale and some personal material were lifted in the heist. Luckily our security measures ensured that the losses were certainly not as bad as they could have been. Duclos Lenses is no slouch when it comes to security. There are several redundant systems in place and even a remote video surveillance with off-site backup that we are working with the authorities to utilize. Customers’ lenses that are here for service are placed in a very secure vault to rule out client losses. The primary upset, for us, is time. The 11-16mm lenses take time to locate from Tokina, and even more time to disassemble, machine, re-assemble and adjust. There is no twenty person assembly line, no export to China, just three guys turning wrenches six days a week right here in our shop in Canoga Park, California. That’s a lot of time and labor down the drain.
This leads me to the bright side of this post. In lieu of our recent misfortune, as well as the need to expand and improve, we’ve decided it was time to upgrade the Lens Lab to something a little more respectable. We’ve already found a new location and will begin the transition in the very near future. I put up a post a few weeks ago about how jealous I am of Leo Laporte and Greg Hren because they are moving to bigger, better locations, and now get to join their ranks. It’s a great feeling and as some customers who have visited the current Lens Lab will tell you, much needed. There will be more posts in the near future showing the new digs and the progress we are making.
Back to business. I’ll be providing a downloadable PDF of every single stolen lens make, model, and serial number. We will be asking EVERYONE to spread the word and pass on the list. We’re asking anyone who sees one of these serial numbers or even a lens with the serial number removed or scratched out, to contact us as soon as possible so we can get these guys. This is very personal to us and really impacted the entire family operation. We greatly appreciate any help and cooperation in this matter. Thank you, everyone.

Best of luck in your recovery.

Rather, best wishes.

Terrible news. I had my grip van stolen 5 years ago which was devastating, and understand how the violation feels . I'll pass your list along. Good luck with the next phase Matt!

Sorry for your misfortune Matt.
It sickens me that thieves like this make such a big impact on peoples lives. Not to mention pushes my place in line for an 11-16 farther back.
We have been going through a spree of daylight armed robberies here in Little Rock lately, and business owners are very worried about what to do.
Even businesses in the nice parts of town have come under attack. I know many will think it to be overkill or not agree with my thinking, be we have started carrying side arms when traveling.
You just don't know when the bad guys decide they want to jack $100K+ worth of film gear in a van which they think is easy pickens.

All the Best!

Dave

So sorry to hear about this. One has to wonder why someone would do something like this? What are they going to do. Sell them off a truck? I love my 11-16. Creeps.

well at least if we see a slew of 11-16s for sale well know where they came from. Heres to hoping they dont know how unique a lens it is and get caught out.

Sorry to see this kind of thing happen to such nice people.

Matt, hopefully this gets resolved quickly and the people who did it are brought to justice. So depressing to read stories like this. Reminds us that we are living among sordid souls who make life far more difficult than it needs to be.

Sad

so sorry to hear that. I am continuously baffled why anybody would steal cinematography gear, which is almost
impossible to sell without anybody noticing...

having said that I hope those lenses will resurface.

Matt, really sorry to hear this, what a shame. I know how difficult it is to get lenses done at such a high level, so to lose all that careful work and time is just a huge bummer. Hopefully, those waiting for the lenses understand and this is resolved soon.

Thanks for posting ...

That's just terrible. Hope you guys recover the goods.

I hate that..... violated feeling, after all that hard work. Ugh! Hope they catch them.

.

When my van was stolen, the police said there was a ring of organized crime thefts of film-related gear. Shipping containers were being filled with film-gear-contraband. When the container was full, it was shipped to Eastern Europe where the film industry was booming at the time, and it was unlikely that the goods would be identified as stolen. I can't vouch for how accurate that was, but its what the Emeryville, CA Police detective told me.

We had our studio broken into once, and I know how this feels. That doesn't help you but this I will do, pray that the thieves are found rapidly and the lenses recovered. Sorry this had to happen.

horrible news for you and your customers, Matthew. Anywhere in this world a lot of equipment (and also some of us) is used every day, which was stolen from companies all over the world. What I do not understand, that in this global world we are not able to catch it and bring all thieves behind the walls.

This is horrible news. Your attitude is top-flight, as your work.

Hope you get up and running quickly. And hope these people are arrested.

If anyone spots a lens, don't make a big fuzz. Instead, call Duclos so they can get the authorities to check it out.

Yah I agree. Also, I guess it's my bias but I think the penalty for stealing beautiful lenses should be extra severe -- like double the time. It's as heinous as stealing fine art.
