  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HDRx questions

Graeme, I'm still at sea over how to figure out how much HDRx the scene demands. Is this something that will become intuitive or will there be a way to judge on monitor before choosing?

As explained by Mike Seymour on one of the RC podcasts (sorry I forget which one) one useful technique is to set the stop for your 'normal' exposure, allowing any hot highlights to blow. Then you gradually stop down until the clipping indicators go off. Then you put the stop back to your original one, and set HDRx to the number of stops difference between the two. Mike explained it better than me, but I hope that makes sense!

Makes perfect sense Nick. Thanks.

just watching. thanks

I was talking here before that HDRx based on a feature that X track takes more exposure with smaller shutter speed number is very limited.

It's not suitable for slow-motion that EPIC is able to record (5K/4K 120 fps, 2K 300 fps, etc...)

Everybody can do one simple test like this:

Take any HDRx example available online from EPIC and slow down it - 50% of normal speed using VLC player, Motion or similar app...

The you can see all those slow shutter speed artifacts very clear.

Hopefully that RED right now is working on design of new sensor a.k.a. RED DRAGOON that would within its super clean high ISO

give X track in HDRx new and appropriate breath or slow motion free of blurred motion artifacts and also flicker free footage.

A cinematographer doesn't need 18 stops DR and was pretty comfortable with 15 stops that any fast film stock today is able to give.

Also I'm sorry for interruption of the tread and it was just my (well known) opinion about HDRx thing.

so, opinions are always different. i did some very nice tests with hdrx, even in motion. +3 looks fine to me. it´s right, most of times you don´t need it, the DR of Epic is pretty good without hdr, but i am glad to have it, WHEN i need it ;-)

Hello, everybody.

I wish to know if it is possible to use the HDR reccord when we shoot a scene at 150 fps. Epic dragon, 4k, 8:1 .
I read the user manual and the only thing is "you can't change the shooter speed wen HDR is on". Ok but do that mean I can't choose first the shooter time & motion speed and then activate the HDR reccording?
Thanks a lot
Regards, Juan
