  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can I monitor via HD-SDI (Kona or BlackMagic) ?

I'd like to build a MacPro system optimized for Adobe Premiere Pro, Davinci Resolve and the RedRocket... I've got a couple questions and am hoping someone can advise me on where the pitfalls are.

1. I know that Premiere CS5.5 utilizes Nvidia cards in order to harness the Mercury Playback engine (this is big for me as I use a lot of effects and I want to avoid long render times): If I'm running a Nvidia Quadra 4000 can I monitor via HD-SDI through either a Kona 3 card or BlackMagic card ? If so when monitoring via Kona or Blackmagic is the Mercury playback engine affected (slowed down or compromised in any way) ? Also, how would the RedRocket play a part in this equation ? Seems like an awful lot going on.

2. Doesn't seem like there's enough slots for all the cards ? Nvidia Quadro 4000, Nvidia GeForce GT 120, RedRocket and either Kona 3 or Blackmagic. Will I need some kind of breakout box that enables more PCI slots?

thanks in advance.

Michael

As far as I know the only way to monitor HdSdi is out of the quadro hdsdi daughter board,
so you would likely need to get something like the magma pci expansion box.

1. In Premiere Pro you can monitor vida SDI using the blackmagic or aja sequences... these slow down your your playback rate if your footage is native R3D.

2. I had the RED Rocket but sold it and replaced it with a 12 core Mac Pro. This enables 1/2 res realtime playback of native R3D's and saves the slot where the RR would go.

What kind of a Graphics card are you using?

Premiere will use the Redrocket for debayering and the Quadro 4000 for UI,calculation and monitoring through display and hdmi port.
Resolve will use the GT 120 for UI,the RedRocket for debayering, one Quadro 4000 or several(in an expansion box) for calculation and the BM Extreme 3D for monitoring through hdsdi port.

One PCI-e slot is missing for a Raid card.

Jean thank you.
So an expansion box with fix this issue correct ?
If so are there any that you (or anyone else) would recommend ?

Yes,or use an internal software raid.
In the BM configuration guide for Resolve in their support center, they give a list of certified components : Cubix GPU expander.
