  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

3 Epic's and 1 Scarlet Shoot a Bar Mitzvah - Well Ted's Sons Bar Mitzvah

Cause 5k is 3 more K than 2k :)

(and I needed the lens pretty wide or I wouldnt be able to follow the rocket)

good choice then.

Mazel Tov, Matthew, Ted and the entire Schilowitz family!! I've shot a couple Bar Mitzvah's in my day, but this one definitely raises the bar, LOL!

Thanks for all the great responses here… it's already pretty amazing, if you do a Google search for "EPIC Bar Mitzvah" (don't even put in RED, just Epic Bar Mitzvah) - this is one of the top 3 links that shows up, right under some link for an SNL Epic Bar Mitzvah sketch!

So for those that are interested, here are a few stills from the EPIC on the long lens… pretty fantastic to look through the footage, pick the best moments and they are all high rez stills. We have some incredible low light stuff from dusk into evening as well from the Havdalah ceremony.

On the workflow front, here's what I did.. I exported both the R3D stills from REDCINEX (only about 2MB each frame, nice!) and also exported 5k Tiffs from REDCINEX at the same time (about 85MB each frame - yikes!!! crazy big files!)

Then I took the Tiffs and opened them in preview so I could export out shots that were something I could put on the web - best way I found to do that was to send them to email, where in the medium setting, they compressed the Tiffs down to about 500kb each… nice and small, but still Tiffs… then I used preview again to convert them to tiny jpegs, about 100kb each - and that's what i posted here on REDuser. (I'll put higher rez compressed versions up on some photo-sharing site like filcker pretty soon if anyone wants to see that)

Even though I'm far from a pro grading artist, the files are so easy to work with and set the look you want, I can do a pretty good job in just a few seconds… note that Apple's Color sync doesn't appear to be all it's cracked up to be, so the images were nice and warm on my 30" monitor on the Mac tower, but end up looking a bit cooler than I wanted after the Tiff and Jpeg conversions… not sure how to solve that, but whoever want's can come over to my place and see what they really look like as the R3D native files or the giant Tiff exports with really nice warm flesh tones :-)

When I have some more time, I'll post a vimeo link of some of the EPIC footage, so you can see that, and some of the model Rocket slo-mo shots we did…

I also took a snap shot of my son here at the studio checking out the footage via the 4k projector on our 40foot screen (not every kid get's to do that I guess :-) I'll post that pix up later as well so you can see it.

Thanks!

+ Ted

:-) congrats!! This is such a cool story

working on lots more stuff to show you when there is time :-) (just got this pesky "actual job" part of my job that gets in the way a little bit... (although I am sneaking some of the Red Rocket transcodes in during my other meetings and screenings...)

it's really quite something to think that these EPIC cameras are shooting the biggest movies on the planet right now, and are not only capable, but remarkably well suited to shooting something like this, with very small tripods, very basic setups, and no real significant crew, just Dino shooting the handheld and moving the data on his super cart, Tyler shooting the close ups and me being Dad and on and off cameraman... fun doesn't begin to describe how cool it was to see the EPICs working this way.

At 30,000 feet right now on the way to a hype Williams kanye west EPIC music video shoot and loving this thread. 6 or 7 years ago I used to do 3 camera shoots solo with a z1u and 2 x hc3 in hdv and I though that was pretty cool. Now doing roughly the same setup with the same support, only with cameras that cost a little bit more but have 10 time more resolution and 3 times the latitude.

What is next...10tb raid 5 on an iPhone?

Just a bit more fun for you to check out... here a shot from our theater, and some of the footage on the giant screen at RED that we were checking out - just for size perspective, there is Matthew below the screen :-)

Mini Ted in training. Where's his mic? :)

Congrats Ted! I can't help but to always remember this scene when I hear Bar Mitzvah...

Except I believe this scene was a Bot Mitzvah

That is one serious screen for a "home movie" if I am allowed to call it that!

Here's the Vimeo version of the model Rocket launches after the BarMitzvah, shot with EPIC at 120fps... and the behind the scenes with a little home video camera (love Vimeo, Love the EPIC, and everything looks super cool in slo-mo, especially successful Model Rocket launches!)

Happy 4th of July everyone! :-)
