Will this workflow work for editing RED files without Cineform (this is for a short film):

1) Use REDCINE to create DV files for the off-line edit
2) Edit in PPro
3) Once the edit is complete, go back into REDCINE and render out 10-bit log DPX files at 1080x1920
4) Import the PPro edit into AE Pro and manually replace the DV clips with the DPX clips
5) Grade with Color Finesse and output

I've done the "manual conform" process in AE once before on a Super-16mm project (scanned as 2k DPX files) and it's not as painful as it sounds!

(I have to say that I'm very tempted to get Cineform 4k 444... but I just want to check if there are any alternatives).

Many thanks,
Jack

yes that works. I find it even easier if you name your dv clips and DPX sequences with the same naming convention and do a replace footage in AE. Though I will still go the Cineform route when it's available because it really saves us a lot of time at the end!

yes waiting for R3D -> Cineform RAW converter...I want to bypass Redcine all together. I can't stand Redcine on a PC right now ...it's so slow and buggy (yes I know still in beta) currently you cannot even export cineform files from Redcine build 90 as there is a bug with it!!!!

It's such torture knowing that a great tool is available already but have to wait for RED to catch up..... it's killing us!!!!
I am looking forward to the day that I don't have to use Redcine (love the RED One camera...HATE the software!)....We have our check ready for Cineform!

no tools that work huh? I sure don't want to use dvcproHD for final red edit in windows..or any of the other HDV type flavors....this sucks....

There is one tool that works, Scratch. (well, two tools, Scratch and Scratch Cine).

How do you edit with them? I know they don't work with CS3 edl right?

SCRATCH and SCRATCH-CINE both support EDL and ALE on import and export.

There is also XML import and export - but it is not FCP XML. It's a different flavor for different purposes.
