  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Every other day - we have another, new "fuck yeah" moment with our EPICs.

Today it was seeing Coke S5i exposure setting data on the REDMOTE wirelessly updating. Just awesome.

You know what would be a small but sweet idea; being able to quickly "soft lock" an aperture, so that if it gets accidentally bumped the aperture box flashes red to let you know.

Mark, feel free (i.e.: please) show off some 5i 5k grabs if you get a moment.

I don't know what's sexier...that redmote readout or the images produced by the new 5i's...in short, that's a lot of sexiness you've got there, Mark. Do try to contain yourself.

Mark, does that also work with the new Panchros? (I'd assume so, but you never know...)

Great, last question: is the data being saved anywhere while shooting (metadata, XML sidecar, magic pixie dust)?

Not sure, right now the current REDLINE does not display lens data fields - doesn't mean the data isn't there - but I can't access it yet. Obviously .... it's only a matter of time before we can grab these values wirelessly with a server or app -

HI Mark,

Were you getting the data via the cable connector or the mount?

My understanding is that the i/data and LDS capable mounts are coming later to Epic (hopefully not too much later). But this totally illustrates WHY it is so valuable to have lens data-capable mounts for EPIC.

I would also assume and hope that the LDS data (Arri LDS in my case) would be presented to the Redmote directly from the mount.

Focal Distance + Focal Length metadata + 4k capture.... I wonder if some detail detection + meta data couldn't generate some pretty good 3D scans of the shot before shooting.

If you have the focus distance meta-data from the lens. You know the FOV. You detect what's in focus using edge detection (focus assist) and then rack from near focus to infinity.... *whips out his science lab*

Yes, the data can absolutely assist in the generation of a depth map from a 2D image.

No kidding! I'm using a Previzion system next month primarily because of the live lens information*, but with Epic's live streaming of the /i data and genlock, I could have pre-built profiles for my Cooke lenses and then pipe the live lens info into my real-time rendering system, for live on set VFX previz, without the $150K Previzion system.

*In fairness to Lightcraft, Previzion does more than just real-time lens/camera mapping, but since I already have another (and I might add, more accurate) mocap system I'm using on set, the lens stuff and the keyer is all I'm really getting out of it now that I don't have other solutions for. Keying is obviously possible with, e.g. an Ultimatte box, which is $24K for HD resolution -- a huge savings over Previzion's solution.

Slightly unrelated question Mark - but you see so many lenses. How do you like the 5i's? Compared to Leicas or MP's? Do they cover the Epic at the wide end ... ?

Hey Mark...I tried the 5i Today but the Focal Lenght- was 0.00 to me too and no leds ON weird hã??
Perhaps in the next build... i am the .12 not in .20.
cheers mate

@ Anthony I tested the whole set of 5i today sweeet set of lenses
Also tested the Master Primes too since the 14mm and not vigneted at all
so sweet

Raphael,

Do 5i vignette at the wide end? 21mm and under?

Thanks,

Norm
