  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC frame rates...

A few questions for EPIC users / RED team:

With the latest available firmware, when shooting at 5K FF (5120 x 2700) @ 16bit @ 72fps, what is the best RedCode compression that the camera will allow you to record?
Is it 10:1 ?

With the latest available firmware, when shooting at 5K WS (5120 x 2160) @ 16bit @ 120fps, what is the best RedCode compression that the camera will allow you to record?

My guess is that if the side-module SSD can constantly write at 250MB/s max, with the assumption that the connection and the processor can handle it - this is the camera's limit.

I realize that SSD's can be hooked up to the EPIC in RAID, thus enabling higher write capability, where the connection throughput and/or processing power start to become the limiting factors.

5K WS (5120 x 2160) @ 16bit @ 120fps---12-1
5K FF (5120 x 2700) @ 16bit @ 72fps----7-1 if i remember correctly

The 5K WS seems reasonable. However, the 5K FF is a little far-fetched.
According to my calculation, you get a datarate of over 271MByte/s , which exceeds most (single) SSDs sustained write capability.
I'm referring to SSDs with SATA2 port. The new SATA3 SSDs (example here) can go much higher, but I think the EPIC only has a SATA2 connector.

Massively cool.

How about 2K 16:9 and 3K 16:9? Any news on what the Max fps will be on those?

For ACs who bitch about Red's "complexity" (their word, not mine) would be great if we had contextual tips on the Redmote like "to further increase FPS decrease data rate" and so on, this could appear if/when relevant to what is being adjusted.

I thought EPIC worked so that you selected the FPS and datarate and if it was too high you got a recommendation for the highest possible datarate with the current selected FPS? If so, wouldn't contextual tips be kinda redundant?

Currently it only prompts you the moment you press record, not on the redmote, but on the LCD and viewfinder. You have to press "ok" to select a higher compression ratio, and then the camera starts recording.

or you just hit the record button again...no need to hit "ok"
