I just watched this amazing piece on a new company called LYTRO that uses a new technique to capture images. Instead of capturing one plane of light, it captures the entire light field around a picture. So it captures every beam of light from all directions.

The reason this is great is because you can refocus images in post, convert to 3D (with one camera), and even change orientation. This is pretty huge and this company is making a camera that is pocket sized.

Why am I bringing this up on REDUSER, because I think this is something very "RED". RED has already changed the digital game with it's cameras and honestly I think this would be the only thing that could upstage the EPIC. I don't know, but I think this tech is going to be huge over the next couple of years and I think RED is the right company to adopt this tech early on!

You can find the article and video here:

Thanks for the link! I think this is some pretty cool stuff. It may be a few years off before it could be used in digital video cameras, but I definitely think RED would be the group to beat everyone else to the punch!

I'm a bit more pessimistic here, I think it will be decades. We don't want to sacrifice sharpness and resolution, and dynamic range, just for the sake of post-focussing. But it's an interesting development.

I agree and I don't believe RED would release something that would be a step backwards. But I do believe this will be the next big thing in image capture. Specially if you could shoot 3D without a two camera setup. I'm sure 1st AC's are not all about it, but to be able to do a perfect focus pull in post is a big deal.

It could be 2 years or 10, but this seems like the next step to me.

I can't tell you how cool it would be to be able to nail focus first-time, every-time in post. Wow! Having never seen or heard of this before, I actually gasped when I saw the video.

It's my understanding that the company shopped this technology around for a while before deciding to do it themselves. Rumor has it that Red was one of those companies, but they took a pass on it.

Get ready for all the slamming in 5 years about how pulling focus in post is not "professional" and how it's "consumer" technology. :rolleyes5:

Would you be OK shooting 5K and netting 1K?

Jim

It's one of the things you could do with a 28 K sensor, or a 9K one for that matter :)
