Super 8 (the movie)

Just saw the film and eager to hear some other RED User's thoughts. Not a discussion of film vs. RED, etc. I'm really split on this film- it was really fun and it was like a remix of every film I grew up watching, but I kind of saw everything coming and wished it went somewhere new. It was like ET and Poltergeist and Explorers, then it got all Cloverfield and Transformers inside the Invaders from Mars tunnels. Visually, awesome- I love me some anamorphic flares! Great performances too. Those kids were fantastic.

Thoughts?

I thought it was fantastic. An homage Spielberg no doubt. I thought the kids carried the film wonderfully. It had a real ‘Stand by me’ feel to the performances. The first 90mins were as enjoyable as I’ve spent in the cinema… well since forever.

I found some of the anamorphic flares distracting but over all really enjoyed the cinematography. It recreated the feel of Spielberg’s late 70’s/ 80’s movies very well. I wondered if they used glass from that era on a few of the shots?

What an enjoyable film.

a lot of people would be surprised to find out how much of the movie was shot on Red. We helped with some pick up shots on a MX with Optimo 30-80 and RPP's, blended into the movie perfectly.

Really, Red mx? i never would have thought. overall i thought the movie was quite noisy. Could have been my print/ cinema.

I will start off by saying that I am totally head over heals for this movie. In my opinion, Super 8 is the best film of the year. This movie literally has everything: strong performances, romance, thrills, spectacular special effects and some emotionally gripping moments. Most of all, this film has heart. JJ's love for his craft is impossible to deny. Yes, it is a homage to Spielberg and originality was not as much of a priority as I would have liked it to be but let's face it, they don't really make movies like this any more and it's good to see the Amblin style back on the silver screen. I honestly cannot think of a film that I had more fun watching than Super 8. I can't see it as a contender for Best Picture (though I hope it gets a nomination) and I'm sure there are a lot of film snobs who will try to pass it off as an ET/Close Encounters/Goonies/Stand By Me rip off, but trust me, this film is probably the most fun you will have in a theater this year. The train crash will go down as one of the most spectacular scenes in movie history. I went in with high expectations and this movie knocked it out of the park. This film also pays loving tribute to the inner Spielberg that I'm sure many of us had as kids, shooting our own little masterpieces with out friends. This is a film that filmmakers will love but it is also a crowd pleaser that will be disliked by only the most condescending of film critics.

The funny thing is, I saw The Tree of Life (stunning but long-winded) the day before and Super 8 has still rocketed to the top of my best of 2011 list so if you have not already seen this film, get off your keester, grab your keys and get to the theater. This one is not to miss. 9/10.

I share your enthusiasm for this film Andrew. And you’re right they don’t make films like this anymore. What I enjoyed most about this film was how obvious it was that JJ is a fan of movies and the experience of watching them in a cinema. That train crash was fantastic, even a little tongue in cheek perhaps?

Couldn't agree more with you guys. It was a film that head everything, most of all being heart. It was like my childhood, with a scary ass monster thrown in. Bravo JJ and company.

The only thing that kept me in the theater was the perfect cinematography. The light was absolutely gorgeous.

I didn't have a clue what the movie was about, hadn't seen a single trailer or review. I loved the kids in it and the whole story leading up to the crash. Once the train came off the tracks I found the whole movie rather pointless.


Forgot to mention, I loved the kids in the film. The story was really interesting until they introduced the alien.
