REDucation student comment area for May 2011 class at RED Studios Hollywood

The Week at RED Studios Hollywood was spectacular. I will attend this event in the future any time it is offered.

Aside from all the hands on experience, highly intelligent and capable team of teachers/volunteers, and the additional exposure to so much state of the art technology and equipment, contacts, free food, Peter Holland, unimpeded access to RED's facilities, helicopter cam rig etc...

The most amazing part by far was sitting in the front row listening to TED articulately explain the genius behind RED Mysterium technology and how exactly everything works within the camera's microarchitecture.

I was particularly impressed by Brian Henderson and the masterfully executed program he developed for us as REDucation, he is truly a sophisticated technician and digital guru. To be able to watch that mindblowing footage in the private theatre he set up was a breathtaking sight to behold.

I am so grateful to have had the privilege of listening to and learning from TED most of all... and Michael Cioni as well(in my honest opinion both are literally Gods of digital), this was more than I could have ever hoped for and such a critical reason behind why I feel so invested in RED now more than ever. Stephen Lovett is also a remarkable man with an overwhelming knowledge base of the RED Digital Cinema Camera Philosophy and technique, he is a very skilled DP and his background in computers makes him all the more valuable, in my opinion. My group leader mauricio during the cinematography portion was also highly capable and very knowledgeable about colour science, waveform, and all things Digital...

Also, Robert Kennedy is so incredibly bright and gifted in the field of sound as well, such a valuable asset to any production and he was literally right there explaining how to do what he gets paid the big bucks to do, such a privilege to learn from him. All for such a reasonable price I was so pleased with how much I actually took away from this entire experience for the money, it was entirely worth it.

Thank you so much for making all this possible. If the tickets were 2x the price or even 3x the price it would still be worth every cent because of this insight into the core of RED's technology, meeting Jim and TED, as well as all the other brilliant minds who signed up for REDucation, was truly as priceless experience.

It is no wonder to me that so many great minds have all come together in support and commitment to RED, the most integral part of the New Cinema Movement taking place in every facet of the world's media. Thank you very much indeed.

Sincerely,
Sam Haskell Jr.

One of my friends went to post 2 day with michael, another friend went to reducation and 2 day Advanced cinematography.

There comments to me so far, 2 day post with michael, Off the charts, totally amazing, a perfect class, by the sounds of how he explained it, no room for improvement.

Advanced cinematography on the other hand was problematic, was meant to be Advanced Cinemtography on the red camera for Feature, Music video and Tv,
basically my friend said while it was fun etc, class left alot to be desired, would have loved to have gained experience on how a great dp would use the red in different situations, what lighting techniques they use and why for different situations, or even just more talking from the teacher with alot of tips and things to look out for when shooting red specific, more on the teachers experiences, pros and cons and how to get around the cons, and like people mentioned before, needed more cameras, and maybe more assistants so the people who joined the class would get a chance to get hands on and learn more, but overall even with the problems, sounded like a great week.

Just wanted to pass on the good and not so good that I heard, and the good was definately REALLY good!!!!!! Friend is still buzzing about the info and knowledge he has gained.

I wasn't there, but all these comments add up to one thing... David Mullen. I think people sort of want the "Ask David Mullen Anything" version of Reducation. Everyone wants to see how a great DP would shoot a scene with a Red camera, and who better than David? That guy has a way with words that makes complicated material seem simple, and his years of experience with digital and film cameras is priceless. His lighting knowledge is vast and practical. I'm sure it would work with any number of great DPs, but David seems like a perfect fit :) Just let him do his thing and people can "Ask Him Anything", but in person!

I'm sure David is a busy man, and he may not even be interested in teaching a Reducation. But maybe, just maybe, the folks at Red can recruite him for the next class? How many people on RedUser would sign up for that reason alone? I would :)

BTW... guys like Tim Duran make me want to retire...

Jim

Dude... Settle now.
When your up the pointy end, people like to cut down the tall poppy... you must know that by now.
Being a tall poppy is quite an achievement.

And what are you going to do when you retire, Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos.... Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....Get fat, get laid, eat... surf, take photos....

You know that shit only lasts so long, then you get so bored, you go broke, you turn into Marlin Brando and go nuts and die...

Keep smoking the stogies, keep saying hi to your clients... and holiday more with your new wife. You'll live longer. :)

Man I should be listening to my own advise.

Ted... Your a true PRO!!!! Your replies are so top shelf. I would have spat the dummie! and kicked the cat.

Here is a great bit of old film to make you all think about something else.

Jim, this is clearly a case of to each his own. Personally, I love the smell of amazing tobacco. Don't smoke em much myself, but I'm certainly not offended, particuarly in your massive studio spaces. Just keep being you, making awesome stuff, with bad-ass attitude.

Hey Ted,

If there is a perceived shortage of cameras at Reducation, how about letting the attendees who have them bring their own Reds to class. Nothing better than learning on your own camera.

Our efforts to democratize the industry have nothing to do with the REDucation process. Two separate issues.
- Jim Jannard

Maybe this was meant to be ironic, but I'd humbly submit that it seems that the two have everything to do with one another. Who else would even let all of us in there? I don't see Sony or Panasonic throwing out this kind of inside, extremely useful information...

Indeed, Thomas Jefferson saw education as the cornerstone of democracy...

". . . whenever the people are well-informed, they can be trusted with their own government; that, whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them right." (as cited in Padover, 1939, p. 88)

Could go over the entrance to the studio. In latin, of course. On every level, RED is changing the game.

Thanks again,
Max

Few snaps from the past five days. I had an amazing time and was great to meet you ALL in real life.

Ted,
Any chance of seeing the BTS videos you mentioned. Would be a great promo for REDucation?

Hey that's me with the handheld epic!... That helicopter shot is gold.
I had a great time as well... Awesome working with everyone.

Thanks to Red for the programs!
Cheers

Hey Ted and Brian,
Thanks so much for helping put this on! I have done a lot of shooting with the RED over the past two years so some of this was review but there were many bits and pieces I picked up over the 3 day REDucation course. I think one of my most valuable take aways from that time was the great RED staff and REDusers that I got to meet and interact with. Everyone was so happy to talk, help, answer questions and just sit around and swap stories. And with people from all over the world represented in the class I have come away with a wealth of knowledge and contacts for shooting all over the world. I have already talked with some of my clients about locations and possible productions from some great first hand knowledge I got at REDucation.

I also came away with a great sense of, "We are doing OK", with our production standards and workflows. We can always learn more and things do change but the main pieces really are already in place. That was reassuring and affirming as we move forward with more and bigger productions.

Being able to be at RED Studios Hollywood, was awesome. So much great film and TV history. And being able to have Jim and Jared just stop in (and the cigar's did not bother me at all) to welcome us and then open the floor to questions. Where else do you get that kind of access to the CEO. Then add in a visit from John Schwartzman, the great facilities, grip and gaff equipment galore, the occasional RC helicopter flying an Epic, Jared firing an uzi and the sports cars screaming on and off the lot and it made for a great week.

I did take the Advanced Cinematography course and I felt the same way many others did, too many people with not enough equipment. I jumped right in and got on all the stuff I wanted to and tried to encourage others to do the same but it was like any film set, "hurry up and wait." I did use much of those down time to hang around Peter Holland and the other Peter to ask questions and just hear from them. So I kind of got a personal masters class but having a one day seminar before shooting might have been a better way to go. (Though yesterday I had to light a green screen shot and I used some of Peter's suggestions to make my shot better.)

Equipment wise, I got on everything I wanted that was available and now feel very confident on the Epic due to the generous time given to me by Ivan, Tony, Steve, Joseph and many others. I would have liked to play with some of the support equipment like the Clutch or Gunner rig. We will probably get one or both of these with our Stage 3 Epics so it would have been nice to get our hands on them but they were not available while we were there.

And from everything I have heard about the Post class, I would have loved to have been at that as well, but I couldn't be in two places at once. And Michael Cioni is such a great speaker and teacher. I would have loved to have been able to hear more from him and about Post in the 3 day REDucation class.

And what can I say about Ted? He is a true RED evangelist. His passion for high quality cinema and how RED is taking us there was infectious. Ted, I could not believe that after all the work you did, from sun up to sun down with us for a week, including missing your anniversary, that you were on this thread commenting, at night, on a holiday weekend! That is dedication and love and for that I truly thank you. You guys do go above and beyond and seek to bring us into the process. For each of you at RED, your actions speak as loud as your words.

Now having visited the homestead, I truly feel part of the RED family. When I'm back in LA I'll be sure to stop by and I would recommend this class to anyone wanting to know more about RED.

Mike

working on some of the bts EPIC video footage, might take a while with everything else on my plate, but I'm working on it... if anyone in LA wants to volunteer to do some editing of the footage, let me know :-)

+ Ted

I thought it was a wonderful course and I appreciate the information and the hands on teaching. Someone I recently shot for wanted me to learn the workflow and though I had been reading about it for over a year now, to actually get my hands on the gear and see the workflow happen in front of me was very helpful. No matter how many R3d's I found online its not the same as knowing the file structure, learning the interface, buttons, learning useful tips from a DIT, etc. I thought the remote class went great, and I cannot wait to tell the producer I work for that I shot on an Epic M! I have been very busy doing freelance since the class, but I cannot wait to sit down and play with the r3d files I have. Very excited to go play with them whenever I can come up for air. Thank you OffHollywood and RED, very worthwhile course!

Hey Guys, who was the company that was flying the Epic camera on the RC Helicopter during the red course?

Someone mentioned there might be a behind the scenes video of some of the Helicopter flying around red studios?

Thanks
Troy Smith
