What is the ABSOLUTE cheapest 7" LCD monitor that "WILL" work on a RED-One with an HDMI signal?

I'm looking for something really cheap as a monitor that I can use until the BOMB EVF is available, since it is back-ordered for about 3 more months.

Unfortunately, many of those cheapies, like the Lilliput, do not work. Does anyone know of one that does?

Thanks.

The only person you are cheating by going too cheap is yourself.

although based on what you are requesting I have two questions:

do you have an SDI breakout? or are you going HDMI only?

there is this for decent resolution:

or this, which is a total piece of shit but has HD-SDI

If I were you I would spend the money on the SmallHD or something similar. Being cheap only F*cks the Sh*t out of yourself when you are in a critical moment of trying to work.

but really, I'd recommend you get a smallhd DP6. It's worth the money.

Dan, as someone who is looking at a 7" monitor for a feature that is coming up in October, I was thinking of the Red 7". I use the EVF mostly while operating, so the monitor is for awkward angles and the A.C. Would you recommend the Small over the Red? And why? Thanks.

I'm afraid I did not explain myself well enough.

I realize all that you've said, and I do NOT care about that.

I'm looking for a "throw-away" monitor that will work TEMPORARILY on the RED-One. I don't care about resolution. I don't care if it falls apart in 6 months. All I "do" care about, is if it will work with a RED-One in HDMI.

I would NEVER use a monitor for anything critical in the kind of cinematography we do anyway. Only the BOMB EVF, which is, of course, not available yet. If we ever did decide we wanted a "good" monitor, we would get the Red 7" for sure.

Thanks.

@George:

See if you can find a used smallhd dp1.
On your lilliput is there a mode for dvi? Hdcp is about 33% of the problem with hdmi.
Really an hdsdi monitor is what you want.
Ruige brand are supposed to work pretty okay, check coollcd.com

@Richard:
The red lcd's are nice because they have extra buttons for controls. Very helpful for assistants, and there is only one cable for power and picture.

The smallhds are really great though. Great picture, great support, easy to use.

Hope that helps! Are you shooting in LA? Need a DIT?

Back ordered 3 months? I do believe its a little longer than that :)

One more thing: (personal opinion):

A monitor is never something you want to be disposable.

I mean why? So the Chinese can pollute the earth more because of our need for the cheapest shittiest screen?

I guess the screens are already made and there are plenty of people who can be duped into buying them.

If you want to support this mentality though, there are cheaper and bigger screens that can be run from a P-Tap if you are even mildly a garage engineer. They sell them at best buy and they are under $200 and will run on 12-14v and are 720p.

Sorry to rant, but I think "cheap" is a philosophy we all start with but eventually learn that we will end up buying three cheap things that don't do the job correctly for 1.5x the price of a "more expensive" proper solution.

Just wanted to impart some wisdom that took me a lot of hard knocks to learn.

There are cheap gems to be found at times though, so don't give up hope.

Buying used goods helps, and selling them When you don't need them helps cushion the impact.

Thank you Dan. You have been very kind and tolerant of my idiosyncrasies, and I know my desire for a inexpensive monitor ticks you off, and I'm sorry about that. But, after the purchase of the Red-One, we virtually have no money left for any other accessories, so we have to do the best we can for the time being. Hopefully, it will change in the future.

I don't see how the Haier will work. 1st, it's a TV, and we need it on-camera mountable.
2nd, it only has HDMI input, with no SDI. All you guys are saying they won't work without an HD/SDI.

I don't get it. ????????????????
