  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Tree of Life" wins Palme d'or

Movie definitely looks amazing. Disappointed that in the ICG article it is so film-centric and no mention of an r1 being used...

I don't think that any of the Red stuff made the final cut but I could be wrong. If it was, it was a couple of shots and ICG has talked about digital features in the past so I imagine they would have mentioned it if the Red footage was used in the film. Malick is notorious for throwing away lots of footage and shooting a ton. I would not be surprised if he only ended up using 10% of what he shot. In The Thin Red Line, he shot around 15 scenes of dialog with actor Adrian Brody and ended up cutting his part down to two lines. There were a host of other actors like Thorton and Rourke who shot scenes that ended up being cut from the film.

Unless you were on set with us and saw what we shot with the red one. How could u know?

i have not seen the movie yet. i am in NY right now on a job could not make it to cannes and the cast and crew screening on monday will be in texas where i also can not be. so i hope to see it friday here in NY, after that, i will report back as to how many of our shots made it in... I believe julio and others shot stuff on red after we wrapped principle photography,i cant speak to those shots as i was not there and i do not know what they were. but unless you were in texas in march, april, may & june of 2008, or on location with us in la when we did some pick ups, or you are part of the editorial team, how could you possibly know...actually seems a bit silly to me that someone would make a statement like that.

It's interesting that the last two Palme d'Or winners shun the script and aspire to craft an audiovisual experience.

I think us audiences and filmmakers alike have forgotten that cinema is an audiovisual medium and not just "filmed theater".

Hi Subhadip,
A film with little to no dialogue and beautiful images is often the result of very well written script.

Couldn't agree with you more, especially when it comes to Malick.

@ Dino, Julio. Hope you get some shots in ;)

Can't wait to see this movie in the theaters when/if it ever comes out in Japan.

Can't wait to see this movie in the theaters when/if it ever comes out in Japan.

Opens August 12 according to this: http://www.japantoday.com/category/entertainment/view/malicks-tree-of-life-wins-top-cannes-honor

I can't imagine it not being a hit with Japanese audiences: art, composition, lighting; serendipitous encounters with nature captured through patience (the butterfly); minimal dialogue; understated allegory about the nature and fate of the universe and humanity - all should resonate well. And if that's not enough, the status of winning at Cannes, plus I would guess Brad Pitt and Sean Penn are considered hot by a lot of Japanese girls.

i'm questioning whether ivan paid off the judges so he could say 'told ya so...'

kidding. the fact that it got a questionable response to begin with actually made me want to see it even more than before, and now i'm certainly excited!

i think it's also another master piece from great craftsman terrance malick like 'the thin red line' too. less dialogues and more human feelinga as usally. i am happy to see tree of life . when it will release worldwide.

I think Dino is going to be posting on this thread soon with his thoughts. :)

my mind is sufficiently blown.

red shots did make it in.

i will let you guys be the judge, i wish i did not have to work tomorrow so i could go to central park, look at the lake and just think about it...

i am going in for round 2 friday night....now that i am not so anxious to see red shots and my credit at the end i will let go and just watch...

please go see this movie,

and thanks for all your support!

EDIT: There are certain spices in food that instantly burn your palate, there are others that creep into your system and over time make your whole mouth burn for hours. This film is the later. In the 6.5 hours since i have left the theatre, besides the 2 hours sleep and the stuff i am doing on set for the epic shoot i am on, my mind is racing still trying to process everything. the movie has made my brain larger. i dont want to say much more until there is a greater number of people that have seen it and can comment based on their own experiences. i am certain that i have approached my experience with this movie based in large part on my intimate knowledge of specific scenes i witnessed being shot. the second screening will hopefully take away that bias and allow me to watch it as purely an audience member and not someone constantly thinking, " oh, that made it in" or " where is that part", or " when is such and such shot going to be shown, i hope it is next, oh, there it is, nope, that is not it". remember this was shot 36 months ago so i am a bit rusty on the who, what, where of it all.

hai dino as a cinematographer you are lucky enough to work with terrence mallick because his movies are phographically very beautiful. i am also great fan of his movies. can i know the dp of this movie and when it will be released worldwide if you have any idea about release.

for the record i am not a cinematographer and i was definitely NOT the cinematographer of tree...that is emmanuel lubezki. the film is in very limited release in the states starting today 5/27/11. I agree with your assessment though, i am very lucky to work with terry.

Congrats Dino!!!

@Dino. Once you see the movie, it would be great if you could share with us where your shots are :)
