Here we have the first shots from up close to the vent, on the ground (well, on the ice):

Amazing stuff... not totally off-topic either; if my wife hadn't been sick I would have been shooting this, on RED, I had a crazy superjeep driver all lined up to get on the glacier... as it is I had to stay home and look after the kids :furious3: - this is exactly the kind of stuff I want to do; things that almost no-one else can get to (or is crazy enough to go to), in 4k.

Very cool gallery, thanks!

Too bad you couldn't go. You'll just have to catch it on an Epic 645 when it erupts again in about 4 years...

Geez, Mike. Those were some sensational stills -- I can only imagine how well the Epic would be able to capture that in motion. If that's the kind of thing you want to shoot, I'll definitely be following your threads once you get your Epic :)

That is insane! Looks like The Nothing.

Gah.

Why it should have been me with a RED, not him with a Handycam...

I suppose it's like a dancing bear; the important thing is not that it was done well, but that it was done at all!

I really wish I could afford an M; I don't relish the thought of having to lug a full RED kit into places like this.

BTW here's an example of What I Did On My Icelandic Vacation last year:

Lava as black and light-drinking as a coal celler, snow, fire, and Icelandic skies; that will test HDRx :001_cool:

I hear this has delayed epic-x.....Sorry couldn't resist. Great photos!

it's official, i want to shoot something in iceland. i don't know what or when it's going to be, but it's going to happen. everything i see from there is breathtaking.

so, i don't really know anything about volcanoes... can anyone comment on the electrical activity? that is some powerful imagery!

The 'ash' or 'smoke' plume from an eruption like that is NOT really ash or smoke. It's partly steam and other volcanic gases, but mostly fine rock powder; lava blasted to tiny pieces by the explosive eruption.

These tiny pieces of rock/dust go up fast - they can be ejected at supersonic speed, see the shock waves in this video:

(watch closely at 1:57 & 2:45 - you'll see VERY fleeting white clouds in the explosion, like the clouds you sometimes see in footage of military jets breaking the sound barrier; these are diagnostic of material traveling faster than the local speed of sound)

Plume going up fast, ash particles rubbing together, what do you get? Static! Huge big-time static charge building up, like a thunderstorm but much worse. So very common to get huge amounts of very strong lightning in the plume.

Mike that's one of the coolest things I've ever seen- thank you for pointing that out!
