Had the pleasure of reviewing demo footage from Arri (Alexa), Sony (F65) and RED (Epic) on a 4k screen this weekend.
OK
The RED1 has the MX too. I feel in many situations utterly silly for feeling that the R1M is a more ballanced camera than R1 MX.
And that the MX is a bit underpowered in the R1 body.
And that I really don't find them hard to match.
Well...
I stand by all that, actually...
AND that the MX in the Epic is a totally different beast all together than in the R1 MX.
Geeeesus was them images gorgeous.
And the one significant thing that the Epic handled well that is of most importance is:
Skintones
And
Skintones.
Seems I and Red have some disagreement on dynamic range issues on R1 MX
And flexibility of the files
Which I find... welll... not too good...
I happen to like to agree with people...
BUT
I sure love the fact that I am an Epic-X stage two guy!
That camera has a different level of... well most everything...
The images look so... "fat" for a lack of better worthing.
Sure.
def looks like I will be able to match R1 MX with it, but still the Epic is in a totally different league.
And as to DR...
we can disagree on the differences of opinion of range, but we surely agree on how well the Epic looks when shot for its good sides!
I also learned a bit on how the wavelet compression affects images this weekend. Not by anyone telling me, but through direct simultaiously shot images with the Alexa. Definitely NOT shot at exposure levels where the R1 MX excells, but that was still very informative. And that lesser compression of the Epic sure looks like a fantastic step foreward in that regard, based on the demo footy.
I happen to think at the same time that if you cannot get a good shot out of the current crop of digital cinema cameras, you cannot really blame the cameras, and that for cinematic screening 4k is def the way to go.
AND that we're still a couple of camera-generations away before we have reached a common baseline ground and functionality and operativity becomes the main parameters. (Like it is between an aaton and arri with the same filmstock...)
That said, The Epic looks amazingly good. The big question will be how the HDRx performs. The MX is a sensible lady. Too much light is not one of her favourites...
If you look at an R1 MX image, you can note that it is a bit underfed in the low region as to processing power. (I love the cam, that's not the point).
NOT so with the Epic.
the Epic does not look like a "small R1 mx". It def looks like a new cam.
Great vibes all over!
I want my Epic now!
Cheers!
