I love my camtram mini dolly !!! It is the nicest, smoothest little piece of dolly
I have ever seen. And it is sturdy enough to carry my Red One.

The only trouble I always had was that I live in work in New York City.
And transporting a set of different length ladders around was always a pain in the neck.
Especially when you are shooting in some high-end building. Wedging a 12 ft ladder into stainless and
glass elevator to get to that shoot in the penthouse was always a little challenging (especially with the
super yelling at me).

So here is my newest toy: Track In a Box.

Basically a modular system, that you can transport in a Pelican case
and then just assemble on the spot.

So here is my first impression:

This is a beautiful over-engineered piece of equipment. I am German
and therefore obsessed with craftsmanship and precision.

When you put this track together there is not a single millimeter gap
to be found anywhere. Which also makes the track extremely smooth.

This thing is as rigid and sturdy as a tank. If you need the bridge across the River Kwai -
this is it ...
One good thing is also the width. The track is just as wide as the maximum width of the Camtram.
Which makes the base very stable.

There are level bars on either side and in the middle of the track. Plus there are adjustable
little legs that screw into the bottom of the track and extra holes.
The latter were a suggestion of mine so the entire thing can be mounted on two video tripods.
Often the track just ends up on a bunch of apple boxes though...

The good thing is also that the track is modular - so if you are in a tight space and you
need a shorter track you just take out one section.

Setup is like building an Ikea couch when you do it for the first time but
once you got the hand of it it is a walk in the park and should not take more than ten minutes.

I corrected the link. My bad. The guy who makes it is actually fellow cinematographer Bruce Taylor from CT.
Very nice guy, who just happens to have in-laws with a machine shop as far as I remember. :-)

The thing with the camtram and the track is that you buy those things like every 20 years or so.
They are made to last....

Axel, Thanks so much for your positive review of the Track In The Box. Lots of time and engineering by people much smarter than me went into manufacturing this track. I too appreciate quality German engineering. As you know, a few weeks ago I had a shoot in Papenburg, Germany where they are building (2) 15 story tall luxury cruise ships... side by side... in the same building! I'm not sure which was more amazing, seeing these massive ships being built with absolute precision or the ridiculously large structures that house them. In any case, quality craftsmanship was the main focus when designing these tracks as well. Another Track In The Box made it's way to the Florida Keys and also received rave reviews. Ten more will be complete in about 10 days. Two of them are sold already and once people see how great this tool really is, perhaps I'll sell the other 8. Thanks again for your unsolicited compliments! www.TrackInTheBox.net
