  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

URBEXERS - TRAILER

This trailer shows completely absent knowledge of all aspects of film making from editing, to framing, to lighting, to sound. You really should go to film school, read books about film making and apprentice with people who know what they are doing.

Be nice, guys, or at least constructive. I think I read about this guy's first feature, which is apparently rather fantastic. If someone cut a similar montage from Breaking the Waves no one would guess it's a masterpiece; there's more to film than nice lighting and camerawork, even if I forget that constantly, and maybe the feature this trailer promotes is really strong. That said, this trailer didn't work for me, either. I get that it's meant to be like a parkour video or something, with a loose narrative and whatnot over music, and then the jump cut at the end gets you, but the footage does not sustain interest. I'm not saying go Cloverfield and shoehorn every functional equivalent to traditional narrative you can into a "found footage" aesthetic, but consider your audience's expectations. It's not identifiable as a conventional trailer, for one, so maybe label it differently, and I'd say cut it down, maybe establish who the characters are and their relationships and arcs a bit if you can. That said, I am the director of one of the weaker trailers ever posted here, so, grain of salt and all...

And for better or worse, this is the kind of aesthetic features are heading toward. Jump cut, fly on the wall type stuff. With so many amateur videographers and cell-phone toting photographers among it, the audience is taking on a more active role, less theater-goer and more documentarian. Just look at comedies like the Office and Arrested Development, Doug Liman's (a superb director, imo) work, and even how studio comedies are getting more "realistic," dramatically structured, and handheld with the Hangover and whatnot. You might be better off studying Bourne Identity than Vermeer and doing photojournalism and a youtube channel than going to film school if you're an up-and-coming director. (Says the Caravaggio and Spielberg-obsessed guy going to film school next fall.)

Matt said it well; +1 to rethink. I see what you were trying to do, I think, but I regret I found it almost unwatchable. I spent three minutes wondering 'where is this going?' and the answer was 'nowhere, badly'. And I speak as an occasional urbexer myself (specialization: power stations!) so I'm not unsympathetic to the subject matter...

I always appreciate human's that are DOING rather then talking etc.. So bravo for getting out and DOING something creative. That being said. Several things did not resonate with me. In order of importance.

A. Way too much shaky camera.
B. Not enough light. Need more cowbell.. I mean light!
C. It came across as more of a music video then a trailer to me. I suspect 80 out of 100 humans would probably say the same.

Kalani-

Bit harsh guys.

Anyone that tries to make any form of content (good in there eyes) needs applauding for at least trying.
I mentor lots of young aspiring director DP's.. Some are going to change the world, others will survive in tv land ok. some will fail badly due to there own laziness. But there is no short cut. It takes years to master the art of cinematography, direction, editing etc... so please cut the guy some slack.
Be nice in other words.

just don't comment if you don't like his work, Comment constructively if you do. At the end of the day, he's just sharing.

Thats the way. :)

Quite right I was a bit harsh. I do applaud effort. I just did not understand or like what I saw. But do keep working at it. I recall that no one applauded what i did at first. Learn a lesson from Ketch. Persistence and keep improving.
