  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

CS5.5 and RED/EPIC full disclosure

Hi David,

You guys at Adobe rock. I enjoyed all the NAB Presentations and I'm looking forward to Epic support. I think it's great you are taking feedbacks from users and being active on this forum. We are starting production on a film next month and we're planning to use a virtually all Adobe solution for post production (editing and effects) I have a few questions; 1) Are there any plans to enable multiple gpu support to accelerate rendering even more for systems without Rockets (cuda 4.0 support). 2) any hope of allowing third party plugins to be written to access the mercury engine and thus increase their performance as well? Finally, I am sure you are aware of FCPx new magnetic timeline feature...I have to admit that is one feature that would be nice to have in future releases. :)

Thanks!

I think we have some support for multiple gpu's now but I need to ask the gpu guy. as for hope of allowing third party plugins to use mercury there is some support now. What you are really asking is can they get direct access to cuda buffers and yes that is something we would like to do in the future.

Cheers

Dave

David, have you seen this bug in CS5 in Windows 7 machine: If I have a R3D 4K 25fps timeline in PPro and export (say to Cineform 4K file) from AE, the export crashes very often precisely on the first frame of cross dissolves. In this case AE gives an error report which says something about error in reading the frame. The same does not happen if the same timeline is R3D 1080p 25fps in PPro.

Edit: The problem seems to occur only when using the Adobe dynamic link. If the PPro project is imported to AE, and then the composition is exported in the Render Queue everything goes just fine.

We don't have an open bug on this. I sent it to the dynamiclink tester. If he can repo we will fix if not he might contact you for more info.

Cheers

Hi David,

nice to have you frequent around here. One thing that I would like to know is if Adobe plans to make PPro/Encore able to create DCP. I have been working with open source tools to create a stereo3d DCP and it's really a pain to make it working with all the servers that exists. It took me a lot of trials and errors. And this seems to be a great addition to Premiere since a dedicated paid software to create DCP cost thousand of dollars (CineAsset/easyDCP), and having this "for free" in Premiere/Encore would just be enough for the entire price itself. Don't know if its possible, hope it is and that you guys have it on the roadmap already (and please 3d dcp :P)! And an Adobe dedicated color correction software, with planar tracking and stuffs, that would work flawlessly with Premiere would be a nice addition to CS6 too...ohh and since this became my wishlist...would be nice to have the ability to edit natively raw stereo3D footage too...having to convert to the cineform to edit s3d just doesn't fallow the whole non transconding/online native editing philosophy...:P

Thank you for your time

Audition is still a 32bit app.. will it still suffer from memory issues?

nah... They have 64 bits running in house every night. It just wasn't important enough to ship yet for the audio market to justify the testing. Most audio guys are still on 32. They will release the 64 bit version when needed.

Cheers

Dave

Will CS5 receive an update for Redcolor2, REDLogFilm or will these features be available only in CS5.5?

CS5.5 only.... There are reasons it isn't easy to update shipping apps... Sorry but there are a ton of other good features in 5.5 to make it worth while...

Cheers

Hi David,

Just wanted to say thanks for your presence on these boards. Couple of things that I mentioned in the wishlist thread, but it would be cool to hear from you if they are on the table as options for future releases:

1. Color Managed Workflow within Premiere Pro. Just like after effects, it seems like it would be a good option to have a color managed workflow within Premiere also.
2. Update to Multicam within Premiere - is there any chance we will have an option to take more than 4 cameras at a time in future releases? Up to 8 (or even more) would be very cool.
3. Background Rendering for After Effects - I recently bought a copy of Grid Iron's Nucleo Pro 3 (now discontinued), and really appreciated the benefits it added to the workflow. Though some parts were a little buggy, the ability to render the ram-preview in the background while working would be a fantastic addition to after effects (especially for when a client is sitting with you). I would love to see Adobe take this functionality (and background exporting too), add some polish and make it part of After Effects. This alone would be worth the upgrade price for me.

Lastly I have a question. As far as I understand it, GPU acceleration only helps with post-processing effects and not with decoding of the orginal video files - the CPU handles this. Is this because a CPU is better suited to this sort of work or is there some other limitation?

Oh and native 3D does seem like it would be a nice selling point for future releases too :)

For 1 - 3 I answer yes... We know of all these issues, priority - time etc determines what what we work on. Will add your feedback to the list...

For the GPU stuff. We have toyed around with putting decode on the GPU. Rocket is one form of this. If we put everything on the GPU then your CPU's will sit idle like the GPU did before MPE. We want all cpu's and gpus to be busy. We have a pretty good balance here.

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback David!

I absolutely agree with you that you don't want a CPU sitting there idle while you are editing! The only reason I mentioned it was that I was pondering ways to make multicam Red footage editable on a normal system while also keeping it affordable. If current GPU's hitting the market were comparable to Red Rocket in debayering performance, adding additional GPU's to the system could be an affordable way to do real-time 4k multicam. It could even be a way to help get 4k S3D projects up and running in real time.

Or, if they could be used for decoding and encoding, pehaps when exporting out to media encoder an entire GPU could take over the processing of the encode while completley freeing up the rest of the system to continue editing? Food for thought anyway. I realise it's easy for me to sit back and say "oh, this would be cool" when the reality is 100's of hrs of development time. At least you guys will never be short on ideas to be improving the software! ha :)

Thanks again Dave :)

Hey David,
I'd like to throw in my request for making Premiere work with Resolve as well.. That would be major cool!

+1 to that!

Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to 5.5.

that is a very nice idea.. especially when you're able to have two gpus, one of them would be completely dedicated to background tasks.. not just for AME, but also maybe for background preview files generation and media enumeration,, also, the ability make the GPU kick in for offloading some decoding off the CPU would be cool too, usually when you're playing R3D files from the timeline the CPU is almost full, and GPU is idle.. there is another point also here, is that you moslty can have more GPUs than CPUs in your system..

Dave,

I heard at NAB that Adobe will be going to a yearly update due the quick technological changes that are in the industry. Any truth to this rumor?

Thanks for the response Dave. If the creation of DCP is implemented I can easily see people buying premiere just for this feature.

For the 3D side I think that the key features has to be visualization, being able to view in all kinds of systems/displays (nvidia 3d, ati 3d, anaglyph, color code etc, polarized displays like Zalman, JVC etc...), and being able to adjust your 3D like HIT (horizontal image translate), keystone correction, frame mismatch, color mismatch. + Would be nice to have an ability to create effects such as creating Stereoscopic Windows, and S3D titles made easily right in premiere (not needing to go to AE)...and the ability to go to AE and work already in s3d without having to adjust nothing =P
And I think that it would be nice to already when you create your project, have the ability to set as a S3D project, so everything you import asks for the other eye to be imported (if it doest find it automatically obviously)...and that the right and the left eye in the project panel appears only as one file (with a different color/icon saying that is S3D)..this way you only have to deal with one track..instead of 2 tracks (one for each eye)..and that this way it would appear as default the S3D adjustments that I said above (hit, keystone correction, frame mismatch correction etc), just like time remmap, translate etc appears as default to every 2d clip...

ok this time I talked too much hehe..

thank you for listening to us!

best wishes

e

I´m glad to hear that David , since I´m getting more and more requests for DCP. And yes, Encore would be a great candidate for that.

As a OnLocation beta tester, I can`t pound enough on the need of 3th party card support.

Story, OL and Premiere work so beautifully together, they could improve anybody`s workflow a 1000% in that combination, but without the ability to record anything but via USB or FireWire (DVCHDpro), it´s only a media management application. It really needs to support at least the BM cards.

Thanks, Frank
