I must say, the announcements in the last few days out of NAB 2011 are on a long line of continuing “Revolutionary Announcements” that continue to lead the pack (of the Motion Picture Industry). Yet I see “Reluctance”, on the part of the “Motion Picture Industry Primary Press” to acknowledge the “Work Of The Red Camera Company”, too bad. However, I do see “Film and Digital Times” coming around, recently John Fauer, ASC has signed on to Red User, good move, welcome John. But, “The Hollywood Reporter”, and “Variety” still seem to be waiting in the Sidelines. Meanwhile Red moves-on!

On November 9, 2010 the R3D Files were protected by a U.S. PATENT issued to Red.Com, Inc., lake Forest, California, Inventors, “James Jannard” of Las Vegas, Nevada and “Thomas Graeme Nattress” of Ontario, Canada, THIS IS HUGE, they are NOT very likely to license anyone else to use it, it means that the “OLD FILES” are not “OBSOLETE” they can be updated as the “TECHNOLOGY” advance, IN ANY RESOLUTION!

I must say, that selling the “Leica Summilux-C PL Prime Lenses” is good move for “Band Pro” and “Red”; The Lenses are sharper, lighter, and smaller that the Arri Master Primes, is just another way of Red evolving and staying ahead of the pack. It provides Red with a wider sales force in Munich, Israel, New York and Burbank. The T1.4 Stop is just what the Doctor ordered for 48 Fps, 72 Fps or S3D all due to its need for more “Stops”. Ari still has the “LDS” (Lens Data System) and that is still a big deal.

Thales Angenieux has decided to make its ENTIRE LINE OF SEVEN ZOOM LENSES compatible with the Red Epic M X 35 Digital Camera Sensor Size; this is major achievement for a glass company, they simply “STOPPED BEATING AROUND THE BUSH” and just DID-IT. All “Three Lenses” in the Optimo 15mm to 120mm range (15x40, 28x76, 45x120) have been made with an “Image Circle” of 31.4 (Plus). The two Angenieux Optimo 24mm X 290mm (12X) and 17mm X 80 mm (4.7x) Zoom Lens have been made compatible with the introduction of a “New Hi-Quality 1.4x Image Extender”. The “Two Lenses” 24mm X 290mm (12x) and the 17mm X 80mm (4.7x), are now 35mm X 420 mm (12x), and 24mm X 112 mm (4.7x) they both eat-up “One T-Stop” of light. And their “Two Lenses” in the “Optimo DP (Rouge) Line” had already been at least 31.4 (Plus) Image Circle. Remember the Image Circle Needed for the Epic M X 35 is 31.26 (Plus).

So what “Hi-Quality Lenses” are available that cover the Full Frame of the Epic X 35 Sensor Size?; The “Leica Summilux-C PL Prime Lenses” 16mm to 100mm Lenses that are the talk of the day; The Thales Angenieux full range of “Seven Zoom Lenses”; The full range of “Arri Master Prime” (LDS) 12mm to 150mm Lenses, and the “Arri/Zeiss Ultra Primes Lens” (Non LDS and LDS) 8mm - 180mm.

S3D, all this talk about shooting at 24 Fps, 48 Fps, or 72 Fps made me think, shoot at 48 Fps or 72 Fps, you can always take out “One” or “Two” frames afterwards, but you have to “Baked-It-In” some insurance for the future. It’s just that simple. After all, “One Second” it’s just “One Second”, whatever happens inside that “One Second Window” can be adjusted for different frame rates; it’s just a “Moment in Time”. It gives you options, in 24 Fps or 48 Fps (even 72 Fps); leave it IN or OUT, you decide LATTER.

“Vaporware” The Sony CineAlta F65, 4K, 20 Megapixels camera has great “specs”, but it’s just a Prototype, this is where Red was years ago, they are playing “Catch-Up”. By the time it finally comes out, the Red FF35 Monstro should be out. However the Camera is a “Monster” it’s just too Big for what it does, and when the cost finally comes out, it got to be a lot! And all the subsequent costly “Camera Improvements”? Can you imagine that camera on Atom S3D Rig? The last published specs for the FF35 Monstro are; 6 Micron, 16 Bits A/D, 6K, 24 Megapixels, but is also not out YET! But those specs are about to change with the “Third Generation of Monstro” “Red Dragon”!

Going back to “The Hollywood Reporter” I cannot understand for the life of me, why they write about Sony’s big CineAlta F65, 4K announcement, when they know it’s “Vaporware”, and ignored Red that actually has a working camera in the field, the M 35? I guess it’s just Big Studio, Big Company, Established Company, Get in the Door, or whatever! But Red keeps on moving ahead “in spite of it all”, they put their money were it counts, in their Product. That’s what films like the Hobbit, and Spiderman, and all the other Big Hollywood films that are scheduled to come out in the future have done, looked at the product. Not to mention the past like; “Pirates of the Caribbean”, “The Social Network”, and “Fair Game” among many more film shot with the older Red One.

Red Dragon, for what I can see, from a distance, Costa Rica, it’s the; first of the New “Monstro Generation” Sensor upgrade technology for the Epic M X 35 - 5K Camera, to be released in 2012. If I understand this correctly, “Red Dragon” is the “Third Generation” of R3D sensors that can be installed on the X M 35, the FF35, the 645 and the 617.

Just to summarized, the Red Epic X 35 - 5K Camera (in no particular order) has: (1) Resolution a of 5K that translates very nicely to the 4K environment depending on the frame size; (2) Has HDRx; (3) Does 96 Fps at “Full Frame”; (4) It’s modular in its designed and can adapt to different situations and configurations; (5) The Atom Rig is a nice evolution of the Red Epic 5K Camera, and from there to the Gates Deep Atom 3D Housing; (6) RED Gunner; (7) Red Ray 4K Projector; (8) Red Dragon, don’t know much but it sounds promising; (9) Various accessories for attaching things to the Red Epic M X 5K Camera; and all the other things that we all know, announced or not.

I wished Red were to be more orderly in their release of information; You kind of have to piece together from what Jim, Jarred, Ted, Mathew, Stuart, Graeme, Deanan, and the whole Red Team release, each in their cryptic way. But, that’s Red, so you have to accept the Company and its people the “WAY THEY ARE”.

I must say; The Red Cinema Camera Company is way ahead of the pack, the PATENT issued to Red.Com Inc is just that a “PATENT” that is NOT likely to be “LICENSED” to anybody. So in my opinion, Red has clear sailing for the foreseeable future and beyond, CONGRATULATION!

If I understand correctly, Red Dragon is an FF35 sensor which would make it smaller than the 645 or the 617 which are sized to compete with (obliterate) IMAX film cameras so I'm not sure Red Dragon will have the option of being installed in the larger cameras - or if you'd even want to do that.

I could be wrong though, I'm no format guru.

As far as the F65 goes, I don't know that I'd call it "vaporware" 4K and above cameras will be coming from the competition, it's just a matter of time. The r3d patent definitely does give red a gigantic head start though, perhaps the competition should "skate to where the puck will be" and just start developing 28K sensors now to give them a better shot at catching up :)

I guess I’m flying blind too! Not being right there at the NAB, I’m here in Costa Rica. But as I understand the “Red Dragon” is a “Third Generation” sensor that will be available in 2012. A “NEW SENSOR” that will be available to all EPICS, that being the M X 35, the FF35, the Epic 645, and the Epic 617. I think we can agree on the fact that they have a really nice looking design for their “T-Shirt”.

As for saying that the Sony CineAlta F65, 4K Camera is “Vaporware” I meant it in the sense that they have NOT SOLD any cameras to the public, as opposed to Red which DID SELL the M 35 to a certain select group of people, and that TWO “Major Hollywood Feature Films” are now in production. I hope all the best for Sony, but until they begging to sell the camera, is “Vaporware”.

The “New iPad Mission Control” has been shown at NAB 2011; I certainly would like to know more about it. In looking at the Photo taken from http://redmodz.com/ it looks like a remote control for multiple cameras. By the look of it you can “See or Control” the Time Code, Clip Name, it indicates the percentage of Media used, the Fan, It indicates the Kelvin Temperature, the ISO and it “Various Picture Controls”. Does it work on the actual R3D files, or is it just monitoring within a certain range?

Jim, speaking for myself; Japan is a tragedy of “Enormous Consequence”; it affects millions of people in “Japan” and “Around the world”. We are truly a “Global Society”, what happens in one place, affects people in another, in these times we are all JAPANESE. For example, it’s an unknown; what happens when you dump “Nuclear Waste in the Pacific Ocean”, downwind from Hawaii, the West Coat of the United States, Canada, and México? Even tiny Costa Rica, it’s all an Unknown.

It’s really tough in the age of the Internet; Bloggers; Cable Channels for every imaginable stripe; it’s really tough to satisfy all of them when something like Japan happens. They understand “For a while”, but quickly forget, and go-on to their insatiable demand for more information.

Meanwhile I hope the “Supply Lines” issue gets resolve through an “Alternative Source”, so you can “Lock Down” the price, it’s not good facing an “Uncertain Situation”. All the best to all of you at RED, keep up the good work! You guys have achieved a lot in the short time span of the “Red Cinema Company”. You have “Thousands” of working “Red One Cameras”, which do work at 4K. The film names have gotten so big that it’s just not practical to mention all of them. The “Pack” is way behind “RED” it’s good to look back once in while, and see them all trying to “Catch Up”.

I really wished I was there at NAB 2011 and not here in Costa Rica, maybe next year.

I was looking at the interview with Ted on “Swiss Filmmaker” http://www.swissfilmmakers.com/2011/04/13/nab-2011-ted-from-red/?lang=en , and it made me think, Red did force everyone to move the “Flag” further down the field. I’m sure the competitors all had their “Five and Ten Year Plans”, but suddenly Red just showed up and said let’s “Move down-field”, or maybe they announced it, and no one took notice.

Ted said that most of the movies playing in the various 4k projectors all over the NAB 2011 were shot with Red because it’s one of the few cameras that shoots 4k (Outside of film), maybe next year there will be more, but there will also be the “Red Dragon”, and the Parade Moves Forward, and they all keep on moving behind Red.

And plus three more untitled biggies from major hollywood studios yet to be announced.......

By the way dying to know their names jim....

Big budget studio movies are great for giving RED credibility.

BUT... wait for the day when a super low budget "indy" film, shot on EPIC/Scarlet/R1 comes out of nowhere and blows the doors off what people think it takes to make a world class movie.

That's when the light will get switched for those who cannot yet see the writing on the wall.

I can see the writing on the wall my friend, that is what i meant ,that if so many big budget hollywood movies are being shot on this cameras even before the production versions have released then just think the amount of indie productions that will be shot on this camera. After all this was jim's dream that an indie movie will use the same tech that is also being used simultaneously on a big hollywood movie, thus narrowing the gap in terms of image quality between the two................

To paraphrase the great W. C. Fields, All things considered, I'd rather be in Costa Rica.

Well, NAB 2011 came and went! The “Red Cinema Company” made a lot of unexpected and expected competitors think about where they are in relation to Red, as it turns out, they are far behind.

Sony and Arri had “to-be-shown,” the Red Epic M 35 Camera is here and “Kicking (Ass)”! Tattoo (the movie) was actually playing on the screen, it was not hype (or a scam). “Red Dragon” put everyone on noticed for the future, it’s what comes next, and if the past is any judge, they WILL take notice. Peter Jackson announced a new video on Facebook; https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10150223186041807 "The Hobbit I & II” are well on their way!

Elsie, I rather be in Costa Rica too, it’s just I would have been nice to attend the NAB 2011 for a few days.

Rohan, I was referring to the “Two Hollywood Films” that began the journey, you’re absolutely right, there is a slew of “Feature Films” in close proximity to “The Hobbit I & II” and ‘Spiderman”, however they are at different stages of preparations, their release will begin in 2012 through 2013 and beyond, when they hit the “Big Screen”.

Let me just say, this is ME; SPECULATING on the “Red Dragon”! As an old “Script Writing Teacher” of mine at “USC Cinema” use to say; “Vacuum deducting is something you do when there is absence of information”. “Margaret Merrierm” I’m not sure if I have her last name spell correctly it’s been a long time. There was no “Digital Anything” at the time, stills, video, or movie cameras, it was just “Good Old Film”, and you had to wait to get it process, and printed, at least overnight if you were lucky, sometimes two days. How things have changed!

Yes, the “Red Dragon” (back on topic). The “SENSOR SIZE”, I think it will remain the same size for the sake of the Lenses “Image Circle”, which would be disastrous for the collections of all the lenses that currently fit the 31.26mm image circle of the Red Epic M X 35 Camera at “Full Frame”. The “DYNAMIC RANGE”, here is where we can expect a change; it can only go-up, to end the speculation of “Film vs. Digital” “once-it-for-all”. The “RESOLUTION”, here there could be slight improvement, just by increasing the “Pixel Density”, let’s say from 5.4 Microns down to 5 Microns, I really don’t know it just me speculating. The “ISO” setting, I think we can also expect a change for the better in this department, to what, I have no idea, but it makes sense. Beyond that, God only knows, and the “Red Team” of course.

Good Luck! By the way, nice photos that Graeme took of the BTS of the “Tattoo Parlor” shoot, thank Jarred. http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?57741-My-first-NAB-experience./page2 All the best to Jim and the entire Red Team, good NAB!

I just saw Ted Schilowitz explain the Red Menu on the 5” Screen Menu at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2gCXNSiHig posted by Kris Canonizado at http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?57837-NAB-2011-Ted-goes-through-Epic-s-menu-VIDEO From the Emmanuel Pampuri video http://vimeo.com/22506855

It was really good looking at Ted Schilowitz explains the Red 5’’ Screen and how it works, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2gCXNSiHig , (also from the iPad Mission Control) it’s really marvelous how they packed so many things into a tiny five inch space!

First the “Fame Rate” expressed in Fps; Then “ISO”; “Shutter Angle”; “Color Temperature” or White Balance below 3200 Degrees Kelvin to over 5600 Degrees Kelvin; The “Frame Size” from 5K 2:1, Full Frame, 5K 2.4:1, or whatever; The “Red Code” from 3:1 all the way up to 20:1, the sweet spot being at 5:1; Other controls Like the status information, which can be control through the “iPad Mission Control”. You can manipulate the output of the image. It all goes into “Meta Data”. You can also control the four tracks of the “Audio Menu”.

It was really good!

The future of RED depends upon product and supply, there's no point give details of a product or guess what another new product before the last was even released, without supply this just causes frustration and devalues Red good name. Apple announces FCPX yup much speculation as a sneak peak, but will deliver in two months, then you can say yes or no . Red announces as an example Scarlet, three years down the line still no product for sale! we wont mention in detail the EVF supply problem etc but confidence in a company is being able to buy, use and and say wow, not just a lucky few getting the up to date products saying how fab it is, and the main stream thinking yup l'll wait a little longer the fade away, or maybe hey lm not the chosen one.
I would love a scarlet (become a running joke with one of my clients as l was raving about scarlet three years ago and how it will be the best thing ever, all he says now is "is it here yet" all l can say delayed again) and a Epic S and the necessary media cards to run the thing with the necessary accessories, have the money just can't get the product, so have to buy other companies products as there out there and available.

Not knocking RED as lm a great fan, just pointing out straight forward facts from a one man band point of view.

At present l can't see RED in main stream mass usage, l hope that changes
