Sound Devices PIX 220 and PIX 240 video recorders add Quicktime recording using Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD* to any HDMI-or HD-SDI equipped high-definition video camera. The portable PIX 220 (HDMI-only) and its sibling the PIX 240 (HDMI and HD-SDI) record Quicktime files to CompactFlash cards or removable 2.5-inch solid-state hard drives.

USB-3, FW800, eSATA..., best recorder I´ve seen.

Thanks brian,
Vico.

Yes on the 240 model it has Ambient TC Clock and Genlock built in. Also AES Digital audio. Just wondering what the price tag is. We will see if they say anything at NAB about price. I could see several good applications for this.

Seems kinda ideal for an Epic module, doesn't it?

You get ProRes or DNxHD video, plus good audio.

This really counters some of Alexa's main points.

Of course, I've only been asking for RED to get Sound Devices on board since... oh 2007 or so.

All these recorders record only 422, whats the real advantage there, I don't get it. Why not just buy a red rocket and export prores redlogfim 444. Could Someone please enlighten me?

I imagine this will not be cheap. I am guessing $5000 plus. It is cool that this is an all in one audio recorder, uncompressed video recorder and screen all in one. My only question would be it's usefulness with the Epic. You don't want to use an external video recorder so this seems more geared for the Sony F3 market.

the Alexa records 12bit 4444, no comparison here.

Well since redcode is better than the formats this thing records to, I think it's safe to say this isn't intended for Epic. I see these types of recorders as intended for cameras with bullshit onboard codecs (I'm looking at you, F3 and AF100).

Edit: oops, Andrew already said that, sorry

$1800 for the low-end version (HDMI-only, no timecode or HDSDI). $2800 for the version that includes timecode & HDSDI.

Clients where I am now calculate the transcode fee and turnaround time isn't worth the 300 or so extra you spend on an Alexa body. Red rentals have dropped steeply in NYC since CSC saturated the market with 30 ALexa's (20 more on the way).

Just lost a three camera bid to F3's for a large budget union spot. Lose gigs every week to Alexa because more and more clients don't find transcoding worth the time/expense. It's not always about the best image unfortunately, just ask Dalsa.
