There is a lot of activity on the STORM front right now and with NAB announcements out of the way we can begin sharing our plans and a few details. Here is what we have in store for the coming months:

STORM 1.0v3 will be available this month:

Metadata burn-in: Get key information into your dailies and editorial deliverables. STORM will be providing the ability to burn-in user selected metadata on export and give you control over location, font (size/colour), and transparency of the data. More importantly you will be able to preview your burn-in prior to export saving you the test exports you all have to perform prior to getting your burn-in right and visible.

EPIC Camera & HDRx: With the latest release of the RED SDK we will be releasing a publicly available version of STORM supporting the EPIC including support for HDRx.

STORM 1.1 Coming in early summer will enable the following functionality:

Logsheets / Contact sheets: Create logsheets or contact sheets from your daily shoot, choose the data you want to include from STORM's rich metadata database, manage the format, add custom fields, preview how it looks before sending it to the printer or as an email/webpage/pdf, and add your own branding/logo to the top so the director knows who it came from.

Tangent Wave: We've seen the requests (lhttp://goo.gl/sddzc) and STORM is adding support for the Tangent Wave colour panel.

Quicktime & DSLR camera support: Can you see all of your media from your shoot on the same timeline? STORM will be able to import quicktime media including Canon 5D/7D and ARRI Alexa ProRes, import all of the available metadata, provide an effect panel based on what's coming off of the camera, stripe a timecode where necessary, support mixed media formats on a single timeline, and provide the full suite of functionality you would expect from STORM.

Avid Editorial Workflow: STORM will be adding support for an Avid workflow including exporting MXF (DNxHD) files and AAF / ALE files.

Microsoft Windows: For you PC users, STORM will be coming to the 64bit Windows platform and provide consistent functionality with what you see on the Mac.

STORM's purchase price will remain the same and all of these features (and more) will be available as a free upgrade to those who hold a licence.

Please keep in mind that we are still in development and its possible that there may be some changes to our release plans. Over the coming weeks we will share our progress and keep you updated if things change.

Regards,
Paul

Wow, burn in, Alexa and dslr support, that's great! This is an iphone snapshot of my red class @ cinecittà. Storm rules!

Paul, that's great! I am really in need of that burn in functionality.

Tangent Wave, cool.

Sounds like next phase is really starting to expand on things, good news.

Thats great News guys !!! Storm is getting better and better....
One question... do we get a LUT support as well? For example i choose RedLOGFilm and want to get a linearised output as this would be a highly needed support for Alexa LOG-C footage as well....
thx

Hi Paul,
Does STORM 1.0v3 include Epic support, or is this a separate release?

Hi Greg,

Yes EPIC and HDRx will be included in 1.0v3 supporting the latest RED Rocket drivers

Any plans for CP200 panel?

We have logged the requests but do not have immediate plans to support the CP200. I will keep it in mind as we plan future releases.

Regards,
Paul

These are exactly the features that I want. You guys are really making something awesome here. :-)

Hi Rainier,

We are taking a look at how we handle LOG-C in STORM right now. Under the covers, our handling of ProRes media will be different that what we do with R3Ds but its our objective to abstract that and provide a consistent experience across the various media. If you are specifically asking about importing a viewer LUT into STORM we do have that on our roadmap but its not targeted for STORM 1.1. Feel free to send me an email (paul.brickel@thefoundry.co.uk) if I am missing the question.

Regards,
Paul

Here is a sneak peek at the logsheet design window...

I'm very excited for both of these updates. This news convinced me to pick up Storm.

Addressing the earlier Alexa question, I would like to take LOG-C Alexa material and toggle a Rec 709 LUT on and off for playback and export renders with this applied.

Also, for transcoding 5D and Alexa footage, will Storm leverage my GTX 285 for close to realtime performance?

Cheers to continued development!

Hi Sean,

This is a clear requirement. Import LogC, apply a REC709 viewer LUT or as an effect (similar to what we do with RED media), and offer the ability to export with a selected LUT applied. We will keep you updated on our progress.

Not at this time, STORM performs decoding/encoding on the CPU.

Nice new features for the 1.1v...Ill probably be adopting when the win7 version hits...

Just thinking out here, and I don't know if this has already been requested, but it would be nice if you guys developed a tablet app (iOS and/or Android) like the "movie slate" app but more towards production data/loging and that can be imported into Storm..an app that even the director would use to give notes to the shots..and maybe multiple departments (vfx, dp) can be using at the same time and them later (or even real time with wireless?) everything is imported on Storm and put on the metadata of each shot...
going even further then maybe adding the possibility to play footage from Storm on the tablet and the dp/director do more notes on the shots and even a simple grade that would go back to Storm...hope this makes sense...

thanks for putting great features on the next releases of storm!

STORM update

Greetings,

As mentioned earlier, we wish to be as transparent as possible with our release plans and keep you updated when plans change.

Below is our current status:

STORM 1.0v3

  • We have refocused our efforts on maintenance and chosen to defer metadata burn-in until STORM 1.1
  • We will be adding support for the latest RED Rocket drivers and the latest RED SDK
  • Managing HDRx blending is continuing to be investigate as we work with the new SDK and will not be offered in the 1.0v3 release.
I do know that many of you are anxiously waiting on burn-in support. However the efforts to squeeze features into our planned maintenance update has delayed our ability to address important product issues along with the latest RED Rocket drivers.

STORM 1.0v3 will be available mid May

STORM 1.1

We will begin beta testing STORM 1.1 towards the end of May when we will start rolling out the features mentioned at the beginning of this thread including burn-in.

We intend to provide frequent updates until we are feature complete including support for the Windows platform.

At this time it is unlikely that STORM 1.1 will include support for Avid Media Composer. The required components that allow us to progress are late in coming together and will likely fall outside the 1.1 release timeframe. If this ends up being the case we will retarget Avid support for a later release.

I will keep you posted as we progress.

Regards,
Paul
