Hello,

In achieving a film look which is more important - when shooting on a motion picture film camera(not digitally) - the lens you use or the film stock you choose.

I really need to know, also what are the best prime lenses - is it possible to get any for 2-3 gran that equal the quality of something that would cost 12 - 13k.

complete amateur but i need to know - thanks.

Well different film stocks have different characteristis, like grain, color reproduction, sensitivity (iso/asa) etc. So its important to choose the right one for your location.

Also lenses have characteristics as well such as the speed they can go, sharpness etc etc. You cant really put the film look down to one. Also film will look like film because its film. If you mean a cinematic look then thats another thing as an amateur shooting film can still make something that looks pretty terrible.

The lens is more important .... digital productions are often transferred to film ... and said to have a digital "look", you are in fact watching a film. It's the digital "system" used to acquire the footage which has made the difference.
If you use a film camera and shoot film ... you will have a 100% "film look", not all "film" looks are the same. If you shoot film decide on the look you want and choose lenses and film appropriately .... all your combinations will have a 100% "film" look. The "film" look can be more accurately described as a "not the video look".
