  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MX Chip Exposure Confusion

Crazy stuff. Did you open in REDCINE-X? If not... I'll kill this thread.

Jim - maybe it would be a good idea in all of your software to do a version check online (if a connection to the internet is available) and also check if the footage in any given R3D supports that particular version? Just an idea...

I did end up opening the footage in redcine X, its a bit hot and green there too but definitely better than in red alert. its also much easier pulling highlight details back in redcine X and i can get the footage to look "normal" very easily. seems like redcine can interpret the footage much better and retain detail.

thanks for clearing that up for me, i was used to the red alert workflow and didn't realize I had to go a different path with MX......hoping to meet up with Mark Toia next week so he can show me how its done properly :)

I'm rendering some screenshots now and will post them in a few minutes out of both programs so u guys can see the difference.

myraRedAlert was exported from Red Alert with these settings:

Color Space: REDSpace
Output LUT: REDSpace
Chroma Denoise: Max
Debayer Detail: Medium
OLPF: Off

Iso: 800

Matrix switched off

myraRedCine was exported with the same settings from redcine.

the redcine footage seems to have less of a green cast and the skin tones have a bit more red in them, also the green of the plant seems much more crisp and saturated. still a bit surprised that the footage looks so hot and blown out at the shooting iso setting.

Btw. Jim I didn't mean to point fingers at RED at all, completely understand that the problem is on my end...I'm just trying to find out where I'm going wrong here with my workflow, or is the issue that obviously stupid that I should bow my head in shame and go back to film school ? :) I feel a bit embarrassed right now....always been pretty comfortable whit my exposure and lighting. As I mentioned before, the camera LCD was at neural brightness settings and i exposed judging off the histogram and false color meter and both didnt show any crazy overexposure or clipping values while I was shooting.

Great idea..

I was following that... Mark, if you get a moment, could you explain what it is that Dom is doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.
