Hypothetically speaking, if one of the big surprises is Scarlet pre-orders at NAB, would loyal Reduser followers get close to realtime dibs on such an opportunity? Hypothetically speaking of course ;)

I would have loved to be there this year but "life" will not allow me to leave Maui around NAB time. I'm guessing there are many in my shoes as well.

Excited to hear what it is either way!

Judging by what they've said about Epic-X orders, if this hypothetical Scarlet pre-order happened it would have a concurrent online option as well.

I really hope it would be online as well! I cannot go to NAB but I do have money for at least a deposit or pre-order (assuming it wouldn't be for the full price of what package we would order)

I get the feeling from the latest posts by Jim that the Scarlet 8x won't be available until the end of the summer.
As a near broke student, I'd be fine with that as it gives me time to save, but I'd like to be able to make a down payment at NAB to reserve my spot in line.

Less than two weeks left! I've been avoiding reduser to try to keep myself from feeling anxious...

Oh, that would be so very great ; )

While I have absolutely no information that I can point to to support my theory… my gut tells me that the Scarlet will not have pre-orders or deposits. That’s not to say that the supply will be guaranteed to meet the demand, but I think if RED were going to take deposits on Scarlets they would have done so by now. I expect to see “BUY IT” go live and then for there to be a waiting list as demand exceeds supply for a while.

I mean I’ve seen companies take both approaches so I really don’t know jack here. I just felt like commenting anyway.

*EDIT* But yeah, I mean if they were going to take pre-orders or deposits I would hope they would also do it online-

I'd still like to pay a deposit... It's pretty easy for me to get $500 to RED - I'd just put it on my credit card. But moving $5000 to the US is a bit tricky for me - it would require a bank transfer and I'd probably need to call my bank to get it approved (which means that it would have to be in Australian office hours) and it would take a working day or two to clear. So that could mean four days (if the orders opened on a weekend) that I'd have to wait...

So for that reason, a deposit to get our place in line would be excellent. I have to investigate other ways to get the full payment over - perhaps my MasterCard debit would work for the full $5000...

I have a feeling Scarlet will not be for sale at NAB because of what is happening in Japan. I guess only EPIC x and s will be for sale.

Stephen,

Yes I see your point and it’s a good one. I was more thinking in terms of a pre-sale deposit. Taking deposits at NAB for cameras that aren’t scheduled to ship until much later.
I mean if you don’t take pre-orders and there isn’t a supply shortage then there’s no need for a line or a deposit. But a deposit to get on any waiting list is totally fair.

I very much doubt that the Scarlet would be available this year. Jim has been having a worrying time recently. The factories, based in Japan, may not be able to deliver the components on time. After all of the terrible things we've seen happening in Japan, it's not going to be surprising that further delays will be incurred . It's in RED's interest to sell cameras, to bring in some well needed revenue, but it's not going to be anytime soon. My advice is not to ditch your current setup, either your own current equipment or what you may hire in. The Scarlet may be ready for the end of this year, but it may roll over to this time next year (2012).

Regarding deposits, I don't think they'll be taking your money for a camera set for even further delays in it's production until there is a clear delivery date.

I agree. I hope this is how they handle it.

I don't know, they have been really quiet about the fixed and the interchangeable. Jim is being very transparent and answering most of the questions about the EPIC but when it comes to the questions about the SCARLET they have been relatively silent. The truth to all this is that no one knows when or how many will ship in the coming future but its gonna be a wonderful camera either way. fingers crossed!

The focus for now is getting Epic-X in production and shipping ASAP. I'm sure they already have deposits and orders in hand from stage 2 customers, with stage 3 close behind, for more than 1000 units. Until Epic ships you won't see much about anything else. they have committed to filling all stage 2 and 3 orders by end of summer.
Hopefully we will get more Scarlet info out of NAB, but don't expect production ramp up until Epic is taken care of.

Certainly the tragedy in Japan will cause some setbacks, as RED has indicated to their customers, but there are still nine months left in the year. Given the recent events and RED's call for patience, it would seem prudent to take a wait and see approach as we move into NAB as oppose to declaring yet another round of speculative release dates.

It's in RED's interest to sell cameras, to bring in some well needed revenue, but it's not going to be anytime soon.

Rather ballsy if I might say. I wouldn't feel comortable speculating on RED's need or lack thereof it for revenue.

But I definietly agree with you here.
