  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will you buy 60” 4K monitor for 10K in next 12 months?

I need and want a 4k projector that is affordable to purchase and affordable to maintain.

I'd like to grade with it in my suite and have it work well in my local theatre where I can set it up and throw an image onto the big screen.

I much prefer working off and looking at projected image then at a LCD/Plasma/LED.
Projected light is where its at for me.

I want a 32" or smaller 4K or higher screen for the desktop -- a 30" LCD with double pixel density (5120x3200) would be perfect!. And I want a 48" to 57" (maybe up to 60") 4K plasma or grading monitor. And I want a 4K projector suitable for color work.

Desktop display needs to be under $2500. Plasma or similar monitor needs to be under $6K and the projector needs to fall under $25K. Oh, and the bulbs on that projector better not cost more than $750.

Make it happen and I'll buy.

The high density LCDs are coming sooner than a lot of people realize.

Let's hope apple has been thinking along these lines and brings it to nab along with the new final cut.

I think a 35-inch 4K LCD would be ideal for my computer.

+++++++1, Michael. Though it doesn't seem likely that Apple would release a 4k monitor soon (I DO realize there was some evidence and speculation to the contrary on the boards recently) because their overall strategy seems to be focused on iOS profit centers.

However, I'm one of the people who believe Apple understands how important the pro market is for their market position as "the best" and "elite" .... and with so many designers and film folks using towers and MBP's, it wouldn't be a bad move for them to offer a 4k monitor. ESPECIALLY if they could bring it under $10,000.

Even though I love Jeff's pricing suggestions, realistically I would probably drop $7-8,000 on a 32 inch 4k apple display at this point. And if they could get it to $5-6,000 -- it would be a total no brainer for me.

I have been waving this flag for more than 2 years now. IMHO the obvious route to affordable 4K displays is Apple. They have led the way on the monitor side for years, with the 2560 by 1600 30" ACD the most recent example.

It seems to me that in order to sell enough 4K monitors to drive down unit cost you need to get digital still shooters and gamers in the mix, there just aren't enough of "us" to forecast sales volumes that make sense for developing and marketing 4K displays.

Rumor has it that Apple actually has a prototype already. My guess would be between 32" and 42" for desktop or living room applications.

High-density display support is built into OSX 10.7 beta. Or at least some support for it is there. And it seems than my of Apple's interface API's are getting support for multiple resolution instances for image elements -- similar concept to supporting standard and "retina" displays on the iPhone. Ultimately everything on the desktop will move to super-high resolution or "resolution independent" displays. I'm looking forward to double density at a 30" size or similar. That would be great if we could work just as we do now on a 27" or 30" LCD, but text would be sharper and cleaner, much less identifiable pixel edges. Then we could also display HD and higher resolution video at 1:1 pixels and see an entire 4K stream at 1:1 or 4 x 1080p on the same monitor with room to spare.

52" diagonal gives you 0.25mm spacing for each of 4K pixels or 101.6 pixels per 1"
Anything less than that and you will be zooming in and out all the time, when doing resolution related operations.

Try to use 32” monitor and do down-sampling from 4K to 2K when figuring out which method of down-sampling to use, for a given scene. Or go on the hunt of color banding problem.

I will not even mention XVF work. And especially when you are in rush, you will go banana:-)

But the final reference monitor needs to be minimum 65" IMHO

I just discovered that we paid 10K for couple of these ones in 1999.
And we still have them and use them somewhere.

Now I need couple of 65" 4K for the same price.
