  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Interchangeable + Mini Primes

Oh, I wasn't talking about zooms. I was thinking of guys who use fast primes. A lot of 2/3" cinema stuff has kinda relied on DigiPrimes. Although, the DigiZooms have been popular, too. I know those were used on Zodiac a lot, but they can be used wide-open at T1.9 and still seem to look great.

The Scarlet/Mini Prime solution was going to be something of an alternative to that F23/Digiprime trip at a much more reasonable price. And who knows, it may still happen. It just seems reasonable that the Scarlet interchangeable might not really fit into Red's lineup without stepping on toes. I was kinda amazed, really. A $900 T1.5 prime for a 2/3" cinema camera is pretty unheard-of. Digiprimes are generally T1.6 and cost about $15,000 each. I mean, I'm sure there's probably some Zeiss pixie-dust there that trumps the performance of the Mini Primes, but I'll bet they were pretty good.

I don't think they will drop the Mini-primes or the Cinema 2/3" model. Too many possibilities for that little gem. May be the last of the current line to be released though. Seems like the last Red comment was around end of summer or early fall.

Hopefully you're right. I'd planned to get the fixed first, anyway. :thumbup1:

Yes... Never say never, but it's on the roadmap."

I do hope it's just a figure of speech
I have invested a lot in 16mm lenses with hope of having them fitted on the 2/3 red.

same got lots of lenses in hope that they will release the Scarlet Cinema with the fixed too

We ought not be making a mountain out of a molehill... Hehe. If I remember right, this isn't the first time that someone has misinterpreted something Ted has said...

I doubt they'd kill off the interchangeable, it was such a sweet looking Scarlet! maybe they'd merge two into one but not kill it off entirely...

Love the look of the Mini Primes, I'm torn between the Fixed and Scarlet Interchangeable,

though I'd love to know the lens range on the fixed etc.

I don't keep track of links but it was a while ago I think I remember JJ saying mini primes were done.
I'm confident the interchangeable is happening right after the fixed if not at the same time (and I'm hoping to be getting both)

Now that is indeed a bummer for anyone on a budget that enjoys the look of wide angle lenses. The fixed zoom is what 28mm in 35 equivalent at the widest?

That is a big issue...

JJ said its 28mm at full frame so thats equiv. to 18mm on a 7d - should be a'ight for narrative.
The widest mini-prime at 6mm should be equiv to 15mm on a 7d.

That is a big issue... I love the look on the ultra wide side for establishing shots etc.

If the Epic S had higher frame rates, then I'd jump at it and its higher cost, but now it seems like all the camera specs being detailed involve too much of a compromise for the low budget action filmmaker.

I have to think that Century or someone else will make a wide angle adapter for the fixed 2/3rd's Scarlet.

BTW, I am not trying to spread FUD and I have heard absolutely nothing to lead me to this way of thinking, but I would not be surprised if Scarlet 2/3rd's is 86'd. I am not trying to start a debate on the merits of 2/3rd's (for many uses it's excellent), nor be contentious.

All I'm saying is that when the camera was $3K for 3K it was a no brainer. A few years later and @ twice the price, the world is a different place... in some ways very sadly so.

Again, I'm not trying to start a forest fire in any way shape or form. I'm just saying that IF this happens, I believe it's possible to connect the dots as to why it happened.

Not to start a rumor, but after the Red Event tonight while everyone was drooling over the Epic and the Fixed Scarlet, Ted sounded less than positive on the interchangeable.

Here's the dialog as I recollect.
INT. Stage 4

A throng of people are closed in on an EPIC-M on a tripod and a Scarlet Fixed is being passed around. PERSON A hands the Scarlet fixed to TED.
Person A:
Well, the Interchangable Lens Scarlet is now a little up in the air now...

TED:

Yes... Never say never, but it's on the roadmap.
So yeah, that happened. It seems like Epic, Fixed Scarlet, and Epic S are the orders of the day with the Interchangable 2/3 Scarlet is some where lower on the list.

Mr. Jannard! Please prove or disprove! True or false! As nice as the fixed lens will sure be, I am really counting on the 2/3 interchangeable to put on some fast glass! And Epic-s might juuuust be out of my price range...or alot...lol.

They KNOW we want solid info., but everything is subject to change... even the speed of the rotation of the earth.

One thing is absolutely certain, at least to me. There will be a 2/3" or ~S16 sensor available from RED. If that is now or later... we'll see. "Subject to change". But even more so, how could you not think Epic-Scarlet would be the secret surprise for this NAB? Just sayin', speculating, guesstimating, what some stuff in a jar I shook was saying to me when I looked at it. 0.002

And we will film our celebration with it :smile5: :cheers2:.
