Hello!

I will be shooting a short film in a couple months and my DP wants to use the RED camera. I am the director but also the editor and wanted to know if anyone could confirm the post workflow I set up is proper or perhaps could offer some better suggestions. I would greatly appreciate any help :) Also, if there has been a better post about this, a link would be great. Searching is difficult to find what I'm looking for. Thank you!

This is what I have planned:

shoot RED
put RED footage on 2 external hard drives during shoot (any suggestions??)
capture into my FCP 6.0, which is on my iMAC (2.4GHz Intel w/1GB memory) using REDCINE-X download and bringing in ProRes format.
Cutting film.
Final product - DVDs, HDCAM, DVCAM

Thank you so much!

1. Get clipfinder. Unless you make RedLogFilm prores 444 1080/2k files for offlines (which I guess you shouldn't...) you do want to go offline/online on this. Clipfinder helps you conform from/to the RAW files and fixes Color bugs (if you are grading in Color).

2. Get FCP 7 if you go RAW in Color.
Now, with the latest RED plugin for Studio3, RAW grading in Color is actually useable...

If you're going the prores 4444 route for online, you're fine with 6, as long as the codec is instlled. If you're doing all this on an iMac, I guess the prores route is the way to go.

Very important:
R3D Data Manager

Yup, but even with that, you're not 100% sure until you have a successfull transcode for offlines...

Cheers and good luck

Good to have you here!

Thank you both for the info!

I am definitely getting R3D Data Manager and am hiring a RED digital tech for the shoot to help me.

I do apologize if this is a total newbie question! But if I plan to stay digital, meaning I will not be going to film at any point, and only have a mac to work on with FCP6, can I use prores 444 1080/2k files in offline and stay that way for output to DVD and HDCAM (for festival and DVD prints)? Or is that a horrible way to go?

Thank you so much again for the info! I really appreciate it. This forum is sooooooo very helpful :)

Good Luck

You won't be able to use ProRes 4444 in FCP 6. That was added to FCP 7. Pro Res HQ is your best choice for FCP 6. Or upgrading...

thank you all so much!

I am in los angeles and will definitely check out the links given. Also, I appreciate everyone's advice and guidance!
