I'm backing up some media from a Gtech to another hard drive. After the backup the R3D files appeared to have disappeared from the original folders. The 4 QT proxy files seemed to remain, but no R3Ds and the folder size fell from 75GB to 3MB.

The backup looked good to I copied this back to another drive and it all looked good again, but when I opened the R3Ds in RedcineX the same thing happened again, the R3Ds disappeared, leaving just the proxies.

Anyone have experience of this or any ideas what might be going on?

Double check the file system on the target disk. Some of them will not handle files larger than 4GB.

Thanks, but it's stranger than that - the files on the target disk seem fine, it's the files on the original (source) disk that seem to be missing. But the source disk still seems to think that the space is occupied (the 70GB) so it seems like it's confused, just with I knew how help it.

I have had this when restoring from BRU to another disk from the original source. You could try downloading the utility Hide unhide from Apple:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/hideunhide.html

It should show up the invisible files or folder. If it is a folder then simply move the files into a new folder and they should become visible. I never have discovered why it happens. Simply that it can but Hide unhide can retrieve them.

Thanks very much David, sadly that doesn't seem to have solved it although I'm sure that you're on the right lines. It seems that the data is there but somehow it is inaccessible.

Do the QT proxies still play with the "hidden" R3Ds on the source disc?
