  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

G-Raid 2TB or LaCie LaCie 2big Quadra 3TB ?

Oh man, I've never had a problem with any of my lacies (I use lacie rugged drives on set to back up footage) and now I'm starting to second guess my use of lacies!!!

Decided I go for Quality, Raid 1 safety and Portability for my current editingstuff. Which one of this two firewire drives would you get?

Probably will get some USB Dock for Sata disks as well for backups. This one looks handy:

If someone knows other brands that offer doubledocks let me know. BTW: Wouldn't it be possible to use this as Raid 1? ;)

Any drives can fail even G-Tech.

However, Lacie lost my custom way back when I had one of their fancy Porsche design big drives which were two standard drives in Raid 0 for speed and capacity. The proprietary controller failed and lost all my data, and Lacie's support was non-existent. Also later found out that there was a problem with many of their wall wart power supplies, which could have been the cause of controller failure, which they completely denied and charged for replacing.

I also have a hinting feeling they used old stock internal drives, or overstock drives. that's how they can keep the price so low. they have the worst issues with not spinning up correctly.

the physical design is terrible too, standing straight up like that, you don't know many people I've seen knock over these drives while editing. granted you can put it on its side, but they design it for you to put it straight up which most people do.

and as for performance, the controller for it I found always gets out performed by g-tech. it's correct to say all drives will fail. My philosophy is, it's not if the drive will fail, just when.

I tend to always just make my own nowadays anyway, with various enclosures, and internals I trust.

yannick: i think thermaltake makes one when u can sled in 2 drives for raid. never tried it, nor have i tried raiding on USB. i try to only work with esata these days as my bare minimum.

You talk about the ICY Dock, I think? The drives aren't included in this one. It's rather expensive for an enclosure.

Recognized a difference among the last two links. Guardian uses Seagate 7200. They use Hitachi as well in the bigger black unit though, which looks like a toaster and they mount the drives vertical as well.

I will not trash our competition but there are some simple facts to choosing drives. Lacie has established it's self as a consumer company looking to sell hi volume and not to pro users. And now with G-Tech being purchased by Hitachi and now Hitachi being purchased by WD. They are also on the fast track to selling numbers and not service. We are no where near the size of either company but we do Answer the Phone, Ship Late and weekends,Support our product in real world video situations, have universal internal power on our FW drives, oh yeah we are on the RED web site as gear we use by RED. So in the end of the day external drives are not very different from each other. But what happens after the sale is what makes the difference between box pushers and true RED community supporters. Just ask around and see how many RED shoots are using are drives. Also if we fail you (the RED customer) Jarred will have me boiled in oil. All kidding aside we want to earn the confidence and support of each and every RED owner and user. And we have special REDUSER pricing so just call and ask for that pricing. Happy shooting to all.
